Another newbie with TT one question...

So i bought a TomTom one a few weeks ago and just got back from a 12 hour drive with it. So my question is about 40% of the time it shows me off the road and telling me to turn left or right when i get to a cross roads to get back on. When it is on track i find if i hit a hill or dip (i'm on the praries) it shows me offroad also. When it is on track and tells me to turn its either too early or too late and again shows me cutting across the ditches!

Is there anyway to fix this or is it because its such a cheap model? Also I updated it the night before i left. Needless to say my trip took me an extra 1 1/2 because i was "not on the road" when i passed the road i needed to go down and ended going past it. Any ideas what i can do?

I'm not familiar with Tom Tom's but is there an option to "lock on road?"
