Re: TomTom ONE

howdy! I'm a new member and have recently purchased a TT One XL. It's a welcome addition to my other GPS units (Edge 305, eTrex Vista)!

I have a few questions about the traffic functions. I have a Blackberry bluetooth phone that it seems the TT is not compatible with as it does not recognize it when scanned. I'm not keen to replace my Blackberry, so I'm wondering if the other method of traffic updates (RDS-TMC Receiver) is a decent alternative?
Any thoughts on advantages of RDS-TMC Receiver vs. FM updates would be appreciated! Is one method more accurate than another? Any favored brand of RDS-TMC Receiver?
The receivers are not cheap (~$100) and also require joining a service which is usually included free for a year with purchase. I wonder if the traffic info is accurate enough to be worth the cost. An accurate traffic picture would be worth some $$ to me as I have a hellish commute everyday =)

I really like the TT so far, it has proven to me that it does a good job of route finding as I pick my way through bumper to bumper traffic on my daily trek from Santa Cruz mountains into Silicon Valley.

One complaint - the windshield mount is horrible, it does not hold to the winshield for more than 30 mins, anybody have a favored alternative mount brand/model?

any input greatly appreciated!

Re: TomTom ONE

Welcome, Feets!

I think of Redwood Country as being further north than that...

But, as you are in California, you know it is illegal to use a windshield mount?

I have a Garmin nuvi, not a TomTom, so I cannot recommend a specific holder. The Garmin dash weighted non-slip mount works great in my car, with a relatively flat dash. If there is something similar for the TomTom and you have room on the dash, I'd recommend that.

to the site feets, glad to have you.

Take a look at this site:
Arkon Resources, Inc. - The Mobile Mounting Specialists™

I have a few of their mounts for a Garmin C530/Nuvi and they work great, very sturdy and well put together . I will actually be writing a review on them in the coming days but enjoy the early edition.

thanks! yes, I have heard that - but I'm not worried too much about getting a ticket. I've seen the 'donut' holder for the dash, but it seems that driving around sharp mountain roads will still throw the dash donut around, so I think I'll try to find a good window mount

awesome info, thx Max - these are sturdy looking mounts and the suction cup has a plunger type thing on it which will (hopefully) keep my unit mounted. it's a bit distracting when the GPS gets thrown around the car because of suction-failure =)
I will get one of these~!

Re: TomTom ONE

Feets, I don't understand those donuts - they don't make sense to me.

You can find the one I mean here (example): amazon mount

Looks like:

thx dav - this example does look sturdier than a donut ... what is the bottom composed of? sticky rubber?

Re: TomTom ONE

Yes, in this case, the standard sticky rubber stuff. There are actually quite a few variations on this theme at Amazon. I was window shopping GPS accessories. Quite a range of interesting stuff.

I'll try to take a pic of it with the nuvi mounted so you can get a better sense of scale.

What's odd about the California law is that you can't use a suction cup mount on the windshield but you can the same device mounted to the dash, in the same location. Obviously not written in regards to the restricted visibility when using a windshield mounted device.

Re: TomTom ONE

Andy, you live in California, and you still think any laws written here make sense? Talk about gullible!

(sorry 'bout OT thread drift...)

Re: TomTom ONE

aha!
I was wondering why the Arkon unit came with a sticky shiny plastic disk that fits their suction cup perfectly. I understood what it did, I just didn't know why you'd buy a windshield mount and then stick it to the dash - but that makes sense with the whole Cali. law thing now.

One of the things I liked about the Arkon was it's range of motion which I thought made it convenient in a few different scenarios. This is gravity keeping it like this, but there is plenty of adjustment putting it on a flat surface and moving it forward and off the dash depending where the suction was.

Re: TomTom ONE

I realize I'm spoiling my own review by posting these pics here a bit early, but I thought it relevant...

This mount is one I was suprised by, is the vent mount. Yes it has the ball for the Garmin but the same thing is available for the Magellan units. I thought due to where it went it would be floppy and annoying. It was pretty sturdy though, enough so that I could pull the 530 off of it and pop it back on/off without it pulling off, that was nice.
Although my vehicle has vents mounted too close to the steering wheel to use this practically - I was able to put it on the passenger side dash. With it over there it was really out of the way nicely and gives the passenger something to do. But the ball post was out far enough that I could swivel it to be facing me without issue.

Re: TomTom ONE

Re: TomTom ONE

I used a vent mount cell phone holder and while stable it ended up breaking parts of the vent. I don't think I would want a heavy GPS on it. But it would depend on the shape of the dash and how well supported it is.

Re: TomTom ONE

good point, Andy
- i think the small vents on my Pathfinder would not hold the unit securely ...

also - it can't be a good thing for the heater to be blasting the GPS??

Re: TomTom ONE

question on saving routes ...

is it possible for the TT One XL to save an altered route? basically, I have several routes I could take to avoid traffic at different spots along my commute. i would like to save these altered routes so that I can cancel the current route and switch to a saved route without having to go through all the 'avoid this road' prompts.

i know, i know - "if I know the routes already then why do i need the TT to tell me the route?"
mainly because I'm not fully confident of the roads to take and there are many narrow, unpaved roads that I can take over the mountain depending on how horrible the traffic is on the other routes
