Navigon 7100 Signal Acquisition

While I understand the concept behind satellite signal acquisition from the network of GPS satellites in orbit, I have an issue with my 7100 in that it can take 15 minutes to get a signal, regardless of the state the unit is turned on from (off or standby). At times I get no signal at all! And I've yet to get a traffic signal... In my son's car (2008 Altima) his unit is on and ready to go in no time at all.

Is this an isolated issue with a bum device perhaps, or are some of you also having a problem?

Is there a way to do a reset on it? Try pulling the battery for a while.

Tried the reset route, as well as factory reset. To remove the battery I'd probably need a few tools that would be err... warranty unfriendly

The other thing to check is whether your car has a metallic coating on the windshield. That really kills the signals. Take your GPS out of your car and see if it does any better. Or take your son's gps and try it in your car and see if it still performs well.

Re: Navigon 7100 Signal Acquisition

My son has an OEM in car system... so he'd be really ticked if I ripped it out but for some reason, time to signal has improved tremendously! I can't get one in the house so fast, but as soon as I take the unit outside I have it within a minute or so... Go figure, maybe the unit knew I was considering a different one!

Hi People,
Am new to the forum thing, but have been a GPS nut, for a number of years now. Absolutely love everything about them. Started with a Garmin ETrex, then onto a series of newer Garmin units, i.e. Street Pilot, Street Pilot III, "two" 2610's, and then "two" 2720's, liked the first so well got an additional for the wife. Now have just purchased the Navigon 7100. Am presently on my first trip with it, as I type this. So far I like it better then "ANY" GPS, previously owned. This is not to say that it doesn't have some issues that they need to address, but it is my understanding that they are about to release a new, very extensive software update that will address many user reported issue. Sooooooooooo! will make no comments of my own at this time. I will be asking many questions, you can be sure in order to make the most of this newest unit. Am also thinking of picking up a new Garmin 250W to supplement what I consider a couple of present short comings, of the 7100. Just on the off chance Navigon doesn't resolve the particular issues to my satisfaction.
AT 70 yeaars of age I have plenty of time, to play with these things and converse with others with like interest. Guess for a first post, that this is more then enough to let you know a bit about myself. I hope to derive much enjoyment from your forum. .. Hank G. USAF CMSGT (ret)

Re: Navigon 7100 Signal Acquisition

Hey Hank, welcome aboard, good first post

Based on your input, I just might have to get my hands on a Navigon 7100 and see what it's all about

Re: Navigon 7100 Signal Acquisition

Hi People's,
Just returned from my first cross country trip with the 7100. Overall I'm very pleased, although the issue with touch sensitivity bugs me. After recalibrating the screen It seemed MUCH better, BUT! the right hand ttop corner of the scren is definitly less sensitive to touch then anywhere else on the screen. That is a problem because if you wnat to change some setting you have to acsess through that corner. Additionally it makes advancing through the seven setup screens a real pain because you have to hit the corner so many times. The road maps are the best I've seen and I like most everything about it. Will package it up tomorrow and return to Navigon with the lack of " touch sensitivity " , being my main issue. When I talked to one of their techs, he said "thats why they included the stylus with the unit". Well let me tell you, they could have included a hammer and it still won't respond 90% of the time, in that upper right hand corner. They will either resolve it, or they can keep there unit.
I also have the Navigon Pocket Loox N100. It's screen is beautiful and the touch sensitivity is amazing. I used it on the return trip from Vegas and it worked flawlessly. It's only faults worth mentioning are a shiny screen (which is because of reflected glare ) and it's not the brightest unit out there. Comes really very well equipped , cost next to nothing and has one of the slickest mounts I've yet to see. Matter of fact, the Navigon 7100 has THE BEST mount I have ever used, bar none. An that a lot of mounts on different units Well gotta go, will keep you posted. ... Hank G.

Re: Navigon 7100 Signal Acquisition

My 2120 Max is having the same problem. There are times that I don't have a traffic signal. Hence, I don't have traffic info. What is worst, there's a traffic signal but thre's no traffic info.

Just like this morning, we drove from Toronto to the City of Hamilton. My traffic signal is on but along the route, there's a huge construction. Traffic was jammed for so many times. The problem, my device is not giving me any traffic info eventhough it's just infront of me.

Another thing that is extraordinary... With the traffic signal on, I got a traffic info. Its about a vehicle on fire within the radius of 19 kilometers. I found this one amazing. However, the moment my traffic signal is off, I started to become frustrated.

I heard that TMC in GPS is still in infancy.

Regards.

Re: Navigon 7100 Signal Acquisition

Interesting thing about traffic, with the NavTeq acquisition by Navigon, you'd think traffic would be better... I have found this so to a small extent - but on the OEM nav in my 09 Murano traffic info flows quite nicely - probably die to the fact that I have an external antenna (down side is that I have to pay for XM to get it). I have my 7100 all nicely updated in the original packaging for sale on the forum elsewhere - used for a week or two before getting the new car...
