Copy SD card data?

Would it be wise to make a copy of the SD card? I'm kind of afraid to pull it out and plug it into a card reader even to see what's on it.

Re: Copy SD card data?

I would if it was me. Just to make sure I have a backup. Actually that's not true, if it was me I would have bought the DVD instead of the card version of the software.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Thanks for the response, all that came with the unit was an installed SD card.

Re: Copy SD card data?

In that case, I would backup the card if you can. Just to make sure you have the data.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Hi Sparky,

You can copy the SD Card onto your computer. Though When you go to update the software make sure you don't mix the two up or save the files to the same place. The upgrade I downloaded was the same name as the old one on the GPS so when I tried to move one to the other, it asked me if I wanted to replace the file since it had the same name.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Re Backup of SD Card - you can use Windows Backup program this should do a proper copy of everything on the SD card. I have a couple of copies kept on my hard drive..
This makes sure file structure etc is preserved properly

Re: Copy SD card data?

Hi Sparky,
You Need to go to https://www.navigon.com/site/us/en/m...n/unauthorized and log into the website. If you haven't registered your product you have to do that first. Then after you are logged on click on My Products on the right of the screen and then your unit will show up and you will see the software update. Just click and down load that.
I just recieved an email from there customer service department, because I don't recieve emails from them and shared with them I thought they needed a better way to update. I recieved the following responce to the updating.

"Regarding the update, beginning Friday there will be an easier method to
updating your device. You can go to the Navigonusa.com website and
download the install shield beginning Friday."

I guess we will have to wait and see if the download is available Friday, but as of know you can upgrade to software 1.1 or possibly wait til friday and download the install shield.

Peace,

Mike

Re: Copy SD card data?

What are the improvements of the NAVIGON Update (release 1.1)?

· Easier point of interest (POI) Searches
o Revamped POI proximity searches provide improved ability to search for a POI near an entered address or destination
o Larger search radius for Nearby POI searches
· Improved U-Turn Logic and Voice Guidance
o New U-Turn logic reduces the number of U-turn prompts given by the unit
o Updated turn prompts express the distance to the next maneuver in feet instead of miles, making it easier to understand
· Text-to-Speech (TTS) Enhancements
o Speech guidance given for all streets regardless of distance from current position
o Better articulation of non-standard street names
· User Interface Improvements
o Revised text strings for a variety of menus
o Enhanced stability when saving user settings
o Direct access POIs are updated when restoring factory default settings
· Improved Bluetooth® Stability for the NAVIGON 7100
· Better Handling of Time Zones in Canada for more accurate expected time of arrival (ETA) information.
Here is the info I found about the update on the site. I just copied and pasted it. Sorry, I can't figure out how to make the font smaller.

Re: Copy SD card data?

I copied the sd card that came with my unit to the hard drive on my laptop. Than I purchased a 2gig sd card and copied everything backto that. I put my original sd card in a safe place and am using the other card.

I did install the upgrade to both cards so I'm good to go there.

Just remember, if you're going to do something like this.... You have to update both cards each time you add a new destination, since that information is written to the sd card and not internal memory in the unit.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Hi Guys- Just got a Navigon 2100 and have been using it for a couple of weeks
with no problem. I tried to upgrade the SD Reader card and lost all of my
original files and it no longer works. Any suggestions on where to go to
get my original SD Card files from?

Thanks,

Marc

Re: Copy SD card data?

Yike, no idea but I'd say check the CD that came with the unit (if it came with a CD?). If not -then try the navigon customer support website:

General - Service & Support - NAVIGON

or

Call Navigon support at:
888-848-0701
Hours of operation: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., M-F, Central

Re: Copy SD card data?

No CD came with the unit,.....I called Nagvigon and got an RMA for the SD Card...was suprised that the files were not on a FTP site so I could download
them and try to re-install myself.

Re: Copy SD card data?

That is really bizarre...you'd think as long as you have things verified they let you pull it down?

Then again, maybe they think the SD itself is flaky and want to make sure it doesen't happen again.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Yes, I did it. It's on my hard drive. In case my SD is corrupted, I can simply copy it to my new SD. Always keep an extra one for your backup. Burn it on a CD is another thing.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Me too, I made a folder called "Original Navigon 5100 Files" and copied them. I like to have the security in knowing I'll always get back to square one if needed. Besides, I like to tinker too much with any new electronics toy. sidV

Re: Copy SD card data?

Hi and thanks for responding. I have purchased maps of European countries on SD cards from Garmin and I wanted to make backups of the SD's in case I lose them while travelling in Europe this fall. I have folled the threads but I'm not sure I understand how to make copies of the SD cards on my Vista PC (with built in SD card reader).
Thanks
Frank

Re: Copy SD card data?

frankie5angels, copying non-protected files on Vista is just like any other Windows operating system - you select the files and drag them to a new folder on your desktop or hard drive. Alternately, you can select the files, right-click and select copy - then go to another folder, right-click and select paste. There's also keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-C & Ctrl-V) to do the same thing.

The issue is that they won't work on a different card than the one they came on, because the data is DRM (Digital Rights Managed) protected to work only with the serial number of the card it came with. So copying your files is a fine idea in case you accidentally delete something important - but it won't work if you're planning on creating a second card to replace the one you purchased in the event of data corruption or memory card failure. There may be ways to break (crack) the DRM protection, but that's not what site is about - so please don't ask.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I understand your description but since the SD cards I purchased from Garmin are Sandisk's MicroSD with adapters (2GB) and look very generic...how to know if they are DRM ??? If I plug them into my card reader in my pc, i can see the folders and files within folders.
Thanks

Re: Copy SD card data?

Any pre-loaded map card from Garmin will be DRM. If you bought the map from somebody else, and they are on unlabeled generic SanDisk flash memory cards, then they may be pirated maps with the DRM broken. I haven't purchased a preloaded Garmin memory card, so I have no idea what the labeling should look like.

If you want to do an experiment, copy all the files from your map card and paste them to a new blank card. Let me know if it works. To be sure that you get even hidden files & folders, you may have to change your Windows Vista view settings temporarily:
  1. In My Computer (or Windows Explorer), click on 'Organize'
  2. Click on 'Folder and Search Options'
  3. Click on the 'View' tab
  4. Under Advanced Settings, click on the following:
    • 'Show hidden files, folders and drives'
    • Uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'
  5. Click 'OK'
    ~
Be sure to undo your folder view changes when you're done using this mode, so as to keep yourself from accidentally deleting important files.
You will now see all hidden and system folders & files. Be careful - you can totally muck up your computer if you accidentally move or erase important files. Copy all the contents of your pre-loaded map card onto a blank card, then put the newly copied card into your GPS and see if it will read the maps.

Re: Copy SD card data?

if you are using windows 2000 or XP you can use the windows tools backup to create a backup of a complete disk . Once you have done that you can use the same utility to restore the backup to a new SD disk.
Vista does not have the same utility.

I have created several backup SD disks that work this way.

Re: Copy SD card data?

Windows Vista Business & Ultimate include "Windows Backup & Restore Center" - Home & Home Premium buyers weren't so fortunate. I hope Windows 7 doesn't follow the same path - but it probably will. However, there are plenty of very good 3rd party disk backup tools. Acronis data backup is one.
