iPhone Nav Apps

Anyone using any of the available nav apps for the iPhone?
I think the battle is currently between Navigon, CoPilot Live and the recently released TomTom apps.

A friend is supposed to be checking out the Navigon app and I'm going to call TomTom with some questions tomorrow before I drop a C-note on it but wanted to get some preliminary info before I commit.

Ok I have deleted all the posts associated with this in the hopes that you will get some intelligently formed responses this time.

Thanks, Max. It was getting difficult to sort through everything. I was starting to feel like I was in one of those Bing commercials...

Re: iPhone Nav Apps

If it helps anyone save any money, don't waste it on the TomTom app yet.

The maps are at least 2 years old, it doesn't have half the functionality of the Windows Mobile version and much of what it does have doesn't work correctly.

As a long time TomTom Navigator user, I'm extremely disappointed.

Re: iPhone Nav Apps

New issue that popped up...

The iPhone's GPS receiver doesn't appear to be up to the task of steadily receiving signals. On a simple trip up to Indianapolis, it couldn't keep my location on the highway. Several times, it had me over half a mile off route and spent time recalculating. Meanwhile, the WM version running on a third tier PDAphone developer (MwG) had no issues despite not having as clear a view outside my truck (iPhone was in the window, MwG was laying on the center console).

Don't know if other programs are having similar issues but I'm not spending money to find out until I can run down this issue first.

Re: iPhone Nav Apps

I use Trapster, Waze, Maps (built in app), and haven't had a problem on trips with not keeping up. The Trapster app is good with directions and traffic and the built in maps does well also. Of course, neither has voice directions. Waze has voice, but only takes you where you have already been.

My first posts were from last year and v1.0. It was horrible and couldn't keep a straight line although I suspect it was due more to hw selection on AAPL's part than sw related. tomtom's updates did well to fix it's initial issues. Much better than at&t's updates which drove me to VZW and this Android phone.

After the updates, I prefer the tomtom app to any other out there now. CoPilot Live is a hot mess and Google Nav can't operate if someone calls you (plus, I feel like Google is following my every entry).

But you're right, I should have come back and updated this post a long time ago.

TomTom FTW!!

Also, I found I prefer to have my maps on my device as opposed to on a server.

Re: iPhone Nav Apps

I trust my Nuvi a lot more than my iPhone. But the Trapster app is nice to have running.
Skobbler tried to get me to turn left onto railroad tracks. No road in sight!

I have a gpsmap 495 for long haul duties...

But I travel a lot for work and phone/nav keeps my load lighter. Especially since most work related nav requirements are airport to hotel and maybe where the next Guinness is coming from...
