What kind of GPS phone is needed for downloading/using free "open source" GPS maps ?

First of all I just would like to mention I do not know too much about GPS related technology, so please do not answer in a very advanced way.

Basically, the easy kind of answer I am looking for, is what kind of words/abbreviations/features should I be looking for, when I read the technical specification of a mobile phone that I consider to buy ?
Also, specific recommendations of mobile phone models is also of interest.

Here is what I would like to do:
I would like to be able to download free maps from the internet (e.g. maybe from the site OpenStreetMap ) and then "insert" these maps into a mobile phone.
So, exactly what kind of supported mobile phone features do I need to be able to do that ?

I mean, for example, do I need things such as "Symbian OS version ?" and/or "Java MIDP version ?" and/or "USB version ?" and/or do I need a mobile phone with support for 3G, UMTS, HSDPA, Bluetooth, EDGE, GPRS, MMS, WAP, ... ?

/ Tom

In these days, almost any smartphone has Google maps application so you do not need to download open street maps. I would consider buying Android phone because it allows to save the google maps for offline use.
