Accessing GPS straight from a WAP page?

Can we access GPS information straight from a WAP page? e.g. The subscriber is accessing a WAP page and is interested to find out where the nearest bank is. The WAP page triggers GPS to search for the location, sends the info to the server and the WAP page then displays location of nearest bank.

Is this scenario possible? Provided the user's handset is already A-GPS enabled. If yes, what programming is needed to trigger this?

Hope someone can help.

Re: Accessing GPS straight from a WAP page?

Seems that all you would need would be for the phone to divulge its current coordinates.

All GPS phones can do that, they do it when you call an emergency number like the police.

So it should be possible to have a WAP page do it, too.

Phones have SDKs (Software Development Kits) that allow you to write programs for them. I imagine that is what you would need.

Try starting at this site for Nokia phones, it looks like GPS enablement is a hot topic there right now.

What you're referring to is LBS, essentially, but unless I am misunderstanding something, your methodology of obtaining XY is a little inverted?

I guess this is where I get lost:

What GPS?
Is the assumption that the user has an unlimited data plan but no real GPS onboard the phone?

Because if the user has GPS, the user can go to Google maps and do effectively what you're speaking of (granted it's really an http page rather than wap).

If you can be a little more clear, that would be cool.

Yes it would be a LBS application. What we want to do is trigger GPS from a, for example, PoI finder ("What's around me?") application from a WAP page?

Does this make any sense?

Re: Accessing GPS straight from a WAP page?

Ah I see, I think...so just a "single clickthrough" solution on a phones wap browser? rather than a couple of Google map clicks or similar, I think I understand.

I think it's possible, but I would assume that although there may be generic wap code out there that can do this - the methods used per cellphone (and provider variations) would differ greatly.

I did find this, which might at least help you figure out some of what you're after:
Mobile GMaps

Hope I am answering the questions you're asking rather than my own
