You seem to be the person to ask my questions. I own a Magellan Meridian Gold and have used it for 7 years. I think I know just about everything about it. I use it in my pickup truck on cross country trips. I have it attached to my laptop which is on a stand on the front seat. The Meridian interfaces with the computer serial port and I can follow my progress and position in real time on the computer screen map (Topo 3d).
I want to buy another GPS. If I could I would buy another brand but I am told that the only brand that interfaces with a computer in real time is the Magellan products.

Therefore, I am looking at the Explorist series. I don't want cameras and bells and whistles. I would like a GPS that puts more on the computer screen than just a triangle showing my position, like speed, time, direction, distance. I have to read those on the actual handheld GPS on the dash. Anyway, I want to upgrade to a "non-legacy" yet, model that can be used the same way as the Meridian.

I also want to take it with me on a trip to South America. So I need to load the World Base Map. I am told that the old World Base Map, which I bought years ago, is not as good as the current one. In South America I will use it only as a handheld.

What GPS would you suggest that I buy. What about the Explorist 310 or 500 series. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

Having just returned from a roughly 1800 mile journey on my Motorcycle around the continental United States using some of the best GPS's Garmin has to offer, I still wonder what causes people to make the decisions they do when developing a product.

I actually have 1 question for Garmin regarding the Zumo:

When you made the Zumo 660 series MSN direct compatible...why would you not allow it to have live doppler radar as some of your other newly released units have. I...

Oh yeah, I promised a photo...so a photo it is. Shot off the dash of my bike when we stopped in VT on a ride this summer.

So it's been awhile since I updated the blog. The last time I posted there was no such thing as lifetime maps from Garmin, and the 8xx series Nuvi's were still in the future. All that behind us now, has it changed your life for the better?

Admittedly the changes in my life that GPS has brought over the past year are not at all how and where I expected them. Rather than questing after PND type of hardware and solutions, I seem to have been spending alot of focus on apps for my phone,...

It's never there when I want it to be. But alas I never did get the Jensen or the Colorado

Ended up getting a Navigon 7100 and a Nuvi 200 instead. The Navigon is going back, and the 200...well, it's awesome, but some part of me is craving the Nuvi 750/60 now instead.

Otherwise, things are fine and good. Racking up the miles on the GS, and farkling it to bits when I can afford to. It's sort of a double edged sword though. With gas being what it is, I ride...

Think it's time to get another gps to help build up our knowledge base here at the site. While one part of me thinks the Colorado is the best bet the other part thinks one of the Jensen NVX units would be cool to play with. Coincidentally my Wallet also agrees with the Jensen comment, hmm.
