You don't really need to update your maps unless there are new roads in your area you aren't seeing on the Nuvi. Or if you want the most current POI database. Other wise, no real need to update maps. Garmin does release firmware updates which are usually bug fixes (and sometimes they add bugs by mistake). Using the Webupdater, you can keep your Nuvi's firmware current.
