How to revive a Megallan Mastro 4250

My wife tried to use my 4250 on a trip to Milwaukee and complained that the unit wouldn't turn on. I also tried to turn it on with the car charger or wall charger to no avail.

The unit is now out of warranty and before this incident was stored in the basement for a couple of months. So I suspected that the battery was drained - then I left it on the wall charger for 24 hours, hoping to charge it back up... It didn't work. Now suspecting a faulty battery, I bought a replacement and changed the battery, it still wouldn't turn on (no screen, no nothing). I have tried pressing the button for over 10 seconds, resetting for over 10 seconds, etc.

Then I googled and found a post saying that there is an internal fuse in the GPS unit (not the fuse in the car charger), but I couldn't find any obvious fuse. I'm an engineer and pretty familiar with computer and stuff, but very new to the GPS.

I used a multimeter to check the battery which I took out of the unit earlier, it appears that the battery does have a good voltage reading - so my early battery hypothesis was wrong. I would hate to have this GPS unit die an unexplained death - Even if I can't revive it ... at least I will learning something.

Any help with where to start would be highly appreciated. Where can I get a wiring diagram or repair manual?

Re: How to revive a Megallan Mastro 4250

I would plug it into the wall, and get behind the power input and see what readings I get and go from there. If the unit is bricked(useless) I don't see what harm you can do to it.Also you could send it in for repair,or buy a new one,gps units are cheaper now than ever. But if you have gone so far as to replace the internal battery, you have the ability to shoot trouble inside the unit.Where I live(S.Louisiana)we have a few electronic shops that could fix near bout anything, for about the cost of a new unit.I don't know of a resource for electrical diagrams for gps units.

You might also try buying a broken 4250 on ebay.
I've seen ones with a spot on the screen, that works.
sell for as little as $35.00 on EBAY, just have wait for the one you want.
then swap out the screen from yours.

Hi all,
TigerDirect is selling the 4250/Refurbished for $69.99 + S&H. eBay does have quite a few broken ones that could be used for parts at reasonable prices.
