Magellan 3100 :(

First and foremost, Hello ALL!

New to these forums, found it on google, and I'm hoping someone here can help me out!

So today I purchased the 2008/2009 Map Update for my Magellan 3100 and somewhere along the lines of updating it...I somehow deleted my .IMI file in the MAP folder of my GPS. Now...of course the obvious thing to do would be to simply copy and paste my old .IMI file (which I backed up onto my harddrive) back into the MAP folder.

But when I try to paste the file back into the GPS, it says I have insufficient memory!!
When I right-click / properties the TFAT file, it says that my GPS only have 106 mbs of space, but that's not possible because none of the files are that big...

Pretty much what's going on is, I have no .IMI file so my GPS is worthless and I can't paste the older/newer file back into it.

Any sort of help would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Magellan 3100 :(

Well, GiGrim - I'm not a Magellan user...so I don't know if there's an solution other than the "nuclear solution" of performing a hard (aka factory) reset of your device. That step causes most devices to rebuild back to their initial factory defaults - but you tend to lose personal information like favorites/waypoints/etc. when you do it. So you might want to wait to see if any Magellan Maestro users respond with simpler solutions before trying it.

For some reason, I couldn't find a quick an easy web search hit when I queried how to do it for your Magellan Maestro 3100 - North America GPS unit. So...when in doubt, read the manual! I couldn't find anything on doing a hard reset there either...but I did run across the restore procedure. If you did the proper backup step, then the restore procedure on page 46 of the manual should restore your device back to the prior status.

If you've done that and it's not working (or that's not the way you backed up your files), I did resort to using the "ask Maggie" feature on Magellan's site to find out how to do a reset:

Quote:
You want to reset a Maestro unit.

Locate button labeled reset on the left, right, or bottom of GPS unit. Once located use a small object to depress button for 2 - 3 seconds. If you cannot locate the reset button or small object you may also press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. In the event you have to reset your unit multiple times within a short period of time please update your unit to the latest software version. Click here for the latest software.
I hope that something in my reply helps out!

Re: Magellan 3100 :(

Thank you very much for the reply!
Unfortunately although I did back up the .imi/.poi files onto my harddrive, there seems to be a malfunction of some-sort with my GPS.

I have called Magellan customer service and I was completely blown away. I have never encountered such terrible customer service. I eventually got fed up and just hung up on them

But Thank you again for your post.

Re: Magellan 3100 :(

Oh...that's terrible and frustrating, GiGrim! Poor customer service is intolerable! If they can't (or won't) help you, they should still be as nice as possible about it if they want you to continue purchasing their product! Try writing to Magellan about your customer support experience...if you aren't completely fed up and washing your hands of the whole thing! I tried to find you an e-mail or mailing address - but the Magellan website is too convoluted, wanted me to create an account, etc. I'm just amazed that they didn't at least offer to have you ship the unit in for repair for a modest cost....

I have no advice for you on how to proceed from here with your Maestro 3100...perhaps another Maestro owner will see this post and have some ideas....
