Maestro 4250 Map Update error

Just tried installing the 2008/2009 map update onto my 4250 (going from map version 29 to version 31), and had a very strange experience.

The update seemed to go perfectly all the way to 100% completed (took about 25 minutes), but after everything was installed, the software threw up a screen that said that the update had failed, asked me to reset the unit and retry the installation, which I did, with the exact same result.

At this point, the unit would lock up on the blue "magellan" splash screen, so I did another hard reset (hoping that I hadn't bricked the unit), and it booted successfully all the way to the main menu. Looking at the map information screen shows that the map is now indeed version 31. Everything seems to be working just fine, so I am wondering if there is just a bug in the updating software that results in a false error message, or if there is actually some corruption in the files that are now on my 4250.

Does the updating software actually do a checksum or other test to make sure that everything transferred correctly? Does anyone know of a specific new feature on the V31 map that I can check for to make sure that the map itself actually updated, not just the version number?

FWIW, the firmware on the 4250 was the latest version (4.60), which was previously installed without any errors. The PC used was a 2Ghz Pentium4, with 2 GB RAM and plenty of free HD space.

Re: Maestro 4250 Map Update error

Welcome to the site, N2ixk.

I've seen other update software (not GPS related) that crashed on the final step. Usually trying to clean up a file that is no longer distributed as part of the update, or removing a registry entry that isn't there, or some other minor programming bug.

Whether it checksums, or if there is a way to prove it is the latest version, I'm afraid I have no idea.

Re: Maestro 4250 Map Update error

It's a very common problem with the 4250. You will have to call support and they will have you mail it in. Did you have the unit set to not turn off? That's the mistake that I had made and it turned off after 20 minutes and screwed it all up.

Re: Maestro 4250 Map Update error

I see no need to mail the unit back, as it appears to be working just fine.

The problem seems to have been a glitch in the updating software that threw a false error message.

Yes, the unit was set to not power off during the update, and it did not. The update appeared to go properly right up to the very end, when the software threw up an error message saying that the update failed. Despite the ominous-sounding error message, the unit now has the new map installed, and has been working without a hitch ever since.
