Magellan Triton 1500 problems and confusion

Ok,
I am a complete newbie to the world of GPS and this is what has transpired so far.
My wife got me an Explorist XL for Christmas,on the advise of a friend, when he and I did the firmware upgrade It crashed. I had to send it in for repair, it took nine weeks to get one back.
They replaced it with a Triton 1500 touch screen.
She also got the Map Send Topo 3D software at Christmas.

Now, is this software compatible with the Triton 1500, Magellan customer service says (yes) but I don't think so. I cannot load any maps to the GPS, it does not recognize the file types.
Also I am possibly not using the software properly.

Is there any HOW TO postings that someone would be willing to direct me to.

I don't want to be spoon fed, I am willing to learn on my own, if some one can get me started in the right direction.

Thanks in advance !
