Ok just bought a new Explorist XL and on the box it shows the unit with streets on it but how do you get it show the streets, all its showing is a general area. Do I have to buy a map for Canada? I thuoght it would work right out of the box and show mw the lakes, streets, how to get to addresses, I must be mistaken. I'm trying to go through the manuals they provided but they are not much help. The only thing I have done is update the firmware. Any pointers would be great. Thank you. |

I believe you need to purchase a street map set for the unit unless it came with some type of data card or DVD/CD that lets you load the maps onto it. The maps that you're seeing now are basemaps. Basically they provide a country/area of major interstates, major bodies of water, some railroad tracks I think, and very little else. I believe you're looking for something like this: Products The only thing I don't see is that its compatible with the Explorist XL? ![]() Here is it's compatibility list... eXplorist 210 Europe eXplorist 210 North America eXplorist 400 Europe eXplorist 400 North America eXplorist 500 Europe eXplorist 500 LE Europe eXplorist 500 LE North America eXplorist 500 North America eXplorist 600 Europe But if you check the item description on Magellan's site it says this: Built-in maps - North American or European basemap shows major roads, parks, waterways and many points of interest SD-card expandability - Add unlimited MapSend topographic maps or turn-by-turn street routing The Magellan page is sort of hard to link to, but if you click this: eXplorist Series Then scroll down to your unit - you will see the features it has (and AutoNav maps are not listed) so I'd assume you have to buy the software. So I would assume you could buy an SD card like we do with the Garmin's and add the maps onto it that way. Sorry I can't answer your question but hopefully that at least gets you on the right path |

Yeah it looks like I need the Canada TOPO which includes street maps and such, a little misleading with the packaging but I should have researched, impulse buys are a bitch, but its nice looking unit anyway should work well for what I want. Thank you.
