I would beware of this one. It sounds too good to be true. I have seen this at $300 and the mfg. cost of the item is roughly double what you are going to pay for it. Also, it has been discontinued by Magellan (which is not a big deal usually). However, if you are buying from a friend or someone you can trust, it is a great deal. If it's a dealer, inspect it to see if it is a repack.

It's very acceptable in performance according to a friend who has it.

Actually this price is believable. The 4250 and 3250 are down to around 250 dollars, the 3225 is selling for 150 dollars, so that is a reasonable price for the base unit of the line.

Maybe their tech support problems are finally affecting their sales. Could account for a recent drop in price.

Actually they are about to launch the elite series maestros so these are probably sell outs. Look here for the specs on the new units:

Interesting, they make a new unit that looks just like their old units?

Screens are supposed to be different technology on some-bezel is flat with screen 3270- and of course firmware with new features. I have no idea if the guts are different. All the current 3200/4200 look alike- it's just what they do is different. Also some have new interface called :one touch: I think. When you release new products every 6 months, as it seems to be happening in the GPS world I would not expect radical changes. Look at grid on tigergps and you can see the differences.

I am up in Middleton- where are you Max?

Re: Is this a good price for the Magellan Maestro 4000

I'm not sure the low price of 139.00 is for real, so be careful. I did find it at buyretail for 193.00
BUYERETAIL
comp-u-plus for 218.99
MAGELLAN Maestro 4000 Portable GPS System - CompUPlus Direct
they also carry the MAGELLAN Maestro 4040 Handheld GPS System - 980920-01 for 299.99
Marks Outdoor Gear has the Maestro 4040 at 299.99
Authorized | Garmin | Magellan | TomTom | GPS | Dealer | Accessories | Cincinnati, OH.
Walmart also has this unit "in stores only" at 298.86 + taxes - still a very good deal.

I hope this helped.

Re: Is this a good price for the Magellan Maestro 4000

Prices are bouncing around like crazy. The 4000 and the 4040 are priced almost the same. For about 50 bucks more ($250) you can buy the top of the line 4250 or 4050, which come with traffic receivers.EDIT Actually now you can buy the 4050 for just over 200 dollars- why would you buy the 4000 for just under 200 dollars???
