Magellan 3200 won't turn on

Hi. I am new to this site. I bought a Magellan 3200 for my husband off of Ebay for Christmas. I shopped early, so I didn't know there was a problem with it for over a month after I bought it. It turned on the first few times, but now wont power up whether it's plugged into the car outlet, electric outlet, or just on battery power. The screen stays totally black. This was supposed to be a brand new unit and was not cheap! Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could try? Thank you very much!

Re: Magellan 3200 won't turn on

Hi Gem, welcome to gpsd,

Im not familiar with the Magellan units, but it sounds to me like the battery is dead. Do you have any way of verifying it's charging up via any of the sources you just mentioned , or does the unit not offer any feedback of any type?

There are a few magellan users on here that can probably offer some more insight on this as well, hopefully they'll be along soon.

Re: Magellan 3200 won't turn on

Hi Max. Thanks for your answer. It won't show me any feedback at all. The screen just stays black. Shouldn't it show something when plugged into the car even if the battery is dead? It sure is annoying when electronics don't work!!

Re: Magellan 3200 won't turn on

Hi I have the Magellan 4250. I have the same problem and it seems the batt drains when turned off. I am able to plug in power and have to wait awile to turn it on. So I think you have a charging problem if it still does not turn on. Also I noticed when turning on I have to hold the button in for 10 sec or more. I am trying to find out why it drains the batt when turned off

Re: Magellan 3200 won't turn on

Try resetting the unit by sticking the tip of a ball point pen or similar object in the hole for the reset button and holding it there for 10 seconds. Then hold down the start button for 10 seconds and release.

As to why the unit drains the battery when you shut it off, the reason is simple, it is not off! It is in sleep mode. This allows the unit to comeback quickly right where it was when you last used it including quick satellite acquisition. If you really want to shut it off- meaning no power drain, hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds when you shut it off. You will note the next time you turn it on it comes up with the Magellan screen and the progress bar, and it will take a short. while for it acquire satellites.

Thanks for the info. That may explain things when I am turning on and off. I do notice some times the bar comes on when I first turn on.

Thanks

If you hold the button down too long on startup it forces it to reboot even if you were in sleep mode. The firmware design for power up is kind of funky. I hold it down two seconds and release- it will start up about a second after I release. If you keep holding it down it will reboot as I described whether you where in sleep mode or actually powered down. Of course I don't think they document this anywhere.
