Problems with Magellan CrossoverGPS not showing in my computer

I have 2 Magellan CrossoverGPS that I just purchased for our Snowmobile club. I have a Garmin of my own. I cannot get the Magellans to be recognized in the computer. The install of the drivers says it is installed and ready to use but it will not show and the Magellan software cannot see them either???????????????????????

I have tired moving the USB plug to other plugs and again it will install them at the prompt when it finds new hardware but it will not recognize them in the computer or the Magellan software program Vantage Point?

Thanks for yoru help.........

Re: Problems with Magellan CrossoverGPS not showing in my computer

I'm a Garmin owner myself, but I'll give it a shot..

What operating system and version? (Mac OSx, windows XP, 2000, Vista, etc.)

If you can find it - you want to find the Device Manager (typically in Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Devices ...or similar path) and see if you can see the Magellans in there. They should be under USB devices.

Other questions..
-Are you trying to plug them in one at a time? (if not I'd try this)
-Are there any other usb-serial devices connected to the computer at this time?
-Have you tried rebooting, and without loading any software at all - can you see them anywhere on your PC, or start vantage point and then see them? (the fresh reboot is the important part)

I am not sure if they should show up like a drive or not on your PC, or if the software works directly with them. I'd make sure the Magellan software was running first, then try plugging one of them in and see if anything different occurs.

Another thing I'll mention is (once you do get this working) and you're trying to move waypoints between your Garmin and Magellan, is GPSbabel.
Link here: GPSBabel: convert, upload, download data from GPS and Map programs
I have not used it personally, but have heard/read good things about it.

Re: Problems with Magellan CrossoverGPS not showing in my computer

Digging around the user manual for it some, I see it has a strange startup method to have the device "found" by the pc. It says to install the software etc. first.
When ready to connect the device:

Quote:
Turn on your Magellan CrossoverGPS by pressing and holding the Power button for
approximately 2-3 seconds. When the Warning screen appears, insert the small end of
the USB cable into the USB port on your Magellan CrossoverGPS, and the large end into
an available USB port on your computer.

Launch the Magellan CrossoverGPS PC Tools application.

Re: Problems with Magellan CrossoverGPS not showing in my computer

Hmmm....it's sounding promising, what is the application you're running this with? ...according to Magellan the Crossover isn't on the list of supported units, is that what it came with?

Link: Magellan GPS

Have you already operated the unit or is this your first time doing anything with it? Is the reset button up or down? Can you try a different PC and see if that makes any diff?

I can't believe it's something wrong with 2 gps's, or the PC...but it doesen't make sense that the typical way of working with the device is this difficult. Unfortunately nobody I know has one so I'm a little out on this one.

OK,

My bad and you are right Vantage does not work with these so I uninstalled that. Now even with the Magellan Tools that come with the unit it does not see them. I am going to try another reboot.....

Re: Problems with Magellan CrossoverGPS not showing in my computer

Progress.

I was able to install it all on another computer and it works. I updated the firm ware. Now I need to figure out how to clean my registry so I can do a new install on this computer to get it to work here???

On another note can you transfer routes and tracks in and out of the Crossover GPS?

Thanks again

Re: Problems with Magellan CrossoverGPS not showing in my computer

Glad to hear you got em working finally.

Routes/Tracks are not something I saw a provision for on the Magellan Navi units so I am not sure how they are handled. I checked the software stuff and all I see is POI info, so it's unclear. If you have any luck with the routes/tracks post back up with it please.

As far as the registry goes...I'd try going into device manager and showing all hidden devices, then removing anything that doesen't look like it should be there - then try reinstalling. Or uninstall anything Magellan related and reboot.

Re: Problems with Magellan CrossoverGPS not showing in my computer

OK I have isolated the problem. The computer I am trying to get them to work on is installing them as a port (Com 3 to be exact) the one they are working on has then installed as Windows CE USB device. So now the issue is how to get this computer to not install it under ports.......??? Any ideas?

Hmm, I'll see what I can find out...do they have Activesync installed on the other PC per chance? or a different version of windows/drivers set?
