| GPS touch screen not responding
Hi: I have had my Garmin nuvi650 for a couple of years. Worked great, but now the screen is frozen and won't let me do anything.

Hey Ronnelly, I am new to this forum and I came to it because of the exact same problem that you are experiencing (I have the 650 as well). I have had problems with the touch screen not working for a while now. I would power the unit off and then on again and it would seem to work. It got more and more frequent so I ended up getting the latest map upgrade (2010 NA). Unfortunately I lost the factory male TTS voice but it seemed to work well. As of the past month or so it started to happen again. I thought it may be due to the unit being too hot (I always leave it under the seat in my car when not in use) so I would cool it off with the a/c vents in my car for a while, power it off and then turn it back on. That seemed to work for a little while. Well, I was on vacation last week and did not use my car until Monday. The unit will power on but the touch screen does not work at all now. I called Garmin and they had me do some sort of reset via my computer and then hold the power button for a minute to get me to the recalibration screen but it did not work. The lady said it will be $80 minimum to send the unit in for repair, or buy a new unit. Costco.ca has the NUVI 1350T with Lifetime Maps on for $250 CDN so I am considering that option unless the 650 can be revived at a minimal cost. I found it interesting that you are experiencing the same problem as I am at the exact same time!!! Sorry for the long winded message, but does anyone have any suggestions?? Hopefully someone could provide us with some insight. |

This is/was my first GPS and someone told me that if I were to get the latest map it may recalibrate the unit and possibly fix the problem. Given the amount of driving that I do for work, I did need the latest maps anyway. Obviously I now know that it does not. Any other suggestions? Is it repairable? Is it economical to do so?

Just about everything is repairable. No, it would not be economical to do so on an ancient 650. I still use my 660 all the time, but if/when it dies? Into the trash bin it goes... Pretty much the way of life for personal portable electronics not still under warranty. They're disposable. If it croaked tomorrow, I'd say the four years or so I've gotten out of it have been more than enough.

Thanks for the reply. I just ordered the Nuvi 1350T about an hour ago. Hopefully I get more than 2 years of use out of it!!

I am thinking of replacing my Garmin 650. Trying to find one that has a battery that can be replaced, instead of the rechargeable factory battery that Garmin has to replace. My battery charges Ok, but sometimes it helps to take a battery out to reset it. It works with cell phones or other electronic devices.

You can remove/replace your 650 battery pretty easily. There are several videos out there showing how to do it and it's not that hard. I changed the one in my 660. But, that's not going to fix your screen problem.
