Newbie help please

Hi

I am Anne and just purchased basic Garmin GPS60. Hoping to use for walks in Tenerife and have added waypoints for walks from dvd -so far so good.

Cannot work out how to add waypoints from grid references - tried using mark from present location and then editing but only seems to work for the numbers not the UK os map reference letters . anyone any ideas , please

Thank you !

Re: Newbie help please

syderapple, welcome to the forum! I believe that you must set up your Garmin GPSMAP 60 to correspond with the grid reference datum that you are using. I have a GPSMAP 76CSx, which is very similar to your 60. I'd be happy to help you figure it out - but I'm heading out this moment to celebrate President's Day with a brunch with the family. Perhaps you could provide more details of the paper map you are trying to get coordinates off of?

While I'm waiting for more details about your map, here's a link where this has been discussed before:

Re: Newbie help please

Hello Guys:
I guess we are all here because we are all in the same boat after getting lost by our GPS not working. What a strange turn of events.

Anyway I bought a Garmin nuvi750 last year, this morning I turned it on and a screen came on notifying me that my maps need to be updated. I went to the Garmin sight and after following instructions carefully, I down loaded the maps and the unit started to load them. Suddenly the screen went black and it has not worked since, not even turning on. I took it into the truck tried it and it didn't turn on there either.

The files have been downloaded into my laptop and even if I try updating it again, I have to go to the Garmin site and it does not recognize my unit although I registered it when I bought it, Did anyone have this experience, else I'll have to send it to Gramin by UPS. Please help
THANKS.

Re: Newbie help please

bimshaboy, I know it's easy to do (& we're all guilty of it), but please try not to hijack somebody elses' thread - especially when their issue hasn't been resolved. It's very easy to start your own thread, in the subforum pertaining to your make of GPS unit - in your case, the Garmin GPS Discussion subforum. I've gone ahead an posted your question there for you:

Okay...wife and kids are in bed, and I finally have time to look at this a bit. I found an online site that presents UK Ordnance Survey maps for free: Get-a-map (see picture #1)

This allowed me to get a valid map grid value I could test with (in this case, I used TQ 326 767 GB Grid). On your Garmin GPSMAP handheld, go to:
  • Main Menu (press the Page button repeatedly until you cycle to this menu listing).
  • Select Setup (using the directional pad to move the highlight cursor around the screen, then pressing Enter to accept your choice).
  • Select Units to get into the "Units Setup" screen. (see picture #2)
  • In this screen, you will see your current settings for Position Format, Map Datum and units of measurement for various types of values - the important ones here are Position Format and Map Datum.
  • For use with Ordnance Survey maps, you will want change your Position Format from hddd.ddddd° (or whatever it is currently set to) to British Grid.
    • Press Enter with the Position Format field highlighted to get a drop down list of available choices.
    • Scroll down to British Grid and press Enter. (see picture #3)
    • You should see Map Datum automatically select "Ord Srvy GB" - in fact, the Map Datum field becomes a non-accessible field.
  • If you wish, you can change the units of measurement to values you are more comfortable with (kilometers instead of statute miles, etc.).
  • When done, press Quit repeatedly to get out of Setup.
The easiest way to manually create a waypoint with your GPSMAP unit is to:
  • Press and hold the Enter/Mark button until the Mark Waypoint screen comes up.
  • Scroll up to the field you want to change (I start with the name field, which by default fills with a sequential numerical value). Press Enter to begin editing the field. Use the direction pad to select the value you want, and press Enter to apply it. Select "OK" and press Enter to exit the field. (see picture #4)
  • Scroll down to Location and press Enter to edit it. Due to our recent change to British Grid Position Format, you will see "BNG" in this field (which stands for British National Grid).
    • The controls are not at all intuitive (at least not to me), and will take some familiarization. (see picture #5)
    • The first two digits are alpha - TQ in this example.
    • Use the up/down arrows to scroll through the alphabet.
    • Use the right arrow to move to the next field and do the same to complete the "TQ" value.
    • Move right again, and begin entering your first numeric value. Note: the GPS unit insists that the value be 5 digits in length, so if the coordinate value is less then that, precede the value with leading zeros (326 becomes 00326).
    • Move right again to drop to the the last 5-digit field for the second numeric value.
    • Enter that vaue (767 becomes 00767)
    • Select OK when finished.
    • Scroll down to Map to see your coordinates displayed on a map (you can zoom in and out and verify the location) - or simply select OK to save your new waypoint if you are confident of your work.
    • If you choose to see the inputed coordinates on the Map first, you can return to the Waypoint editing screen by pressing Quit one time.
    • You can then select OK to finish up, or edit your Waypoint further to make corrections.
Please see the attached screen captures to help clarify matters. I hope that helps, Anne?

Re: Newbie help please

Hi HumVee

Thank you for your detailed message. I need time to look at this further. My GPs is a Garmin GPS60 not a GPSMap60 but hopefully it is set up the same.

Will let you know how I get on - once again many thanks for all the research and information .

kind regards

Anne

Re: Newbie help please

Thanks, Anne. I wasn't even aware of the Garmin GPS60 - but that's no surprise, with the bewildering array of GPS units that Garmin has. I glanced through the Owner's Manual, and it looks like the interface is laid out similarly to the GPSMAP 60/60Cx/60CSx models. Let me know if you run into any snags!
