I am your new guy here. Found you in Google and am glad! I've been motorcycling for about 4 years after having sailed and lived aboard for over 25 years. Now that I am retired and also retired the boat but the wanderlust was still very strong among us. Someone suggested that we consider motorcycle touring and to our surprise we loved it thus came 4 bikes since. Been to 48 States including Alaska..6 Canadian Provinces, Labrador, Newfoundland, etc. While living on the boat we had an array of Garmin and Furuno navigational instruments and am very well versed with the Furuno and Garmin. Of course we had a sextant as backup. Now while motorcycling we have again the Garmins; Zumo 450. Older models were the 2720; eTrek; newer Nuvi and am in the market for a possible 60SCx as we're planning doing the TAT; via motorcycle of course. I joined you because of the constant updates and technicalities with the Garmins where I think Garmin does not always listen to the average geek in what they want their GPS for. It's of course a marketing ploy to seek more $$$$ for themselves. I hope to be able to contribute to this side as well as you contribute to my own improvements of using these new gizmos. Regarding higher model number Zumos: 550; 6xx; etc; these come with an array of audio devices which for me serves no purpose as I am deaf in both ears and so is my wife. Welcome, Dirtrider! You have a rich and colorful background, as well as a wealth of experience with GPS. I look forward to your future posts. I did respond to your zumo 450 track log issue in your other post. However, I can say that the GPSMAP 60CSx & it's nearly identical sibling, the 76CSx, are fine handheld GPS units. I have a 76CSx as the backup to my zumo 660, and many forum members here have either the 60CSx or 76CSx.

Count me in as a 60CSx fan/owner. Excellent unit and it can do turn-by-turn road navigation as backup in a pinch.

Whatever you do, do NOT pay over $250 for it. You can find good deals on new units in the $220 price range on Amazon. Just keep looking out for good prices. Also, remember to budget in about $80 each for the road and topo maps if you want both. Unfortunately, the 60 and 76CSx don't come with any useful preloaded maps. Just a very sparse basemap.

I lived on my 40' Chris Craft c. 6 years--very enjoyable; I sold it when I became married, but still have a smaller boat (Windrift). It's been a long time since I studied Celestial Nav., but it was very interesting. Presently I hold a Captain's Lic. USCG Ocean/Inland/100T. Auctung? Do you speak German? I stuided German in Premed school, also speak Spanish.
