New member with Rino 530hcx gps...

I've acquired my Rino 530hcx recently, added some topographical maps of the regions needed, and will soon be using it on an upcoming trip.
I did try it recently on a weekend using the topo maps, and found that it locked up on me, so much so, that I had to take the battery off to get it to shut down and restart. Just wondering what that's all about?

This gps is chocked full of options, and I'm sure the learning curve will take a while, but any help on easing it's useage would be welcomed!

Thanks in advance!

Powerstroke2000, what firmware is on your Garmin Rino 530HCx? Perhaps if you run the webupdater and download the latest firmware, it might help. Also, how old are the batteries? You may need a new battery pack. Did you get one or two Rino's?

I like the idea of the Rino's alot, and they've gotten good reviews. I'd love to get them for my family, but at $366 each, it would cost me over $2500 to kit out the family (my wife and I and our 5 kids)! Having the FRS/GMRS radio integrated into the GPS unit is handy...but I could purchase 7 eTrex Vista HCx mapping handhelds and 8 (4 pairs) of Midland FRS/GMRS radios and save myself $1000. Still, if I were kitting out an expedition and had the funds available, having the integrated units would be mighty nice!

Another thought...you might try turning off all the extra topo maps you installed, and then running them one at a time to see if one of them is corrupt and causing the lockup. Start with nothing but the basemap installed/activiated, and see if the GPS unit still locks up....
