| Garmin Nuvi 765t and 885t
Has anyone else had total mileage problems with the above units? My Street pilot died and the replacement i got was the Nuvi 765t,what a piece of junk! The total mileage(not the birds eye view) was off, tryed to register it,it wouldnt register, tryed to update it ,it wouldnt update, spent hours on the hold(on a cell phone)with the Garmin reps, they couldnt help,so i returned it and got a Nuvi 885t...AGAIN the total trip mileage is off, called Garmin they said:I dont know what to tell you" so i returned it to Best Buy,and asked to speak to a supervisor. They took a new 765t out of the box put it next to my 885t punched in an address with a known total mileage, and not only was the mileage off on both units, both units side by side had different total miles, and different arrival times.DONT buy a Nuvi until Garmin fixes this, its been the most frustrated ive ever been in my life......30-35 minute wait times to talk to a garmin rep,and if you need to talk to the software department its ANOTHER 30-35 MINUTE WAIT!!!!!!! |

What "total mileage" are you writing about? The mileage that you read from point A to point B is not road mileage, but as the crow flies mileage. G |

Im talking about just what i said TOTAL MILEAGE, im not talking about,as the crow flys, birds eye view, and what ever else you want to call it. there are 3 ways to find out your total trip mileage: 1.Press Go,press speed button, which goes to the instrument panel, and the total trip mileage is in the top right next to the checkered flags. 2.Manually keep pressing the down arrow button until it shows the final destination, and checkered flags. 3.Or Garmins favorite one:press the top bar on the map screen(that shows the next street your turning onto) Then press the button on the bottom that says:SHOW MAP and you guessed it total trip mileage next to the checkered flags. Sorry if i seem a little snappy, but thats Garmins favorite line {you must be looking at as the crow flys mileage) Ive been using the Street Pilot for 4 years and ive been caculating total mileage to quote prices for tows and setting my trip meter to double check the Garmin street pilot and for 4 years the street pilot was right on the money, not even a tenth of a mile off. But the Nuvis are consistently Off on the mileage.Like i said its more noticable on long trips. If your using it for local trips 10 or 20 miles it only off by a couple of tenths. |

If the total mileage is different from model to model, are they both using the same route? Are both set to the same avoidances, vehicle type, route type, etc? Never had that trouble with my old Nuvi 660.

Your definately right they have to be set the same. The 2 units i mentioned in my original post were both set to Fastest time, and Car mode, but the crazy thing is they were both in the parking lot at Best Buy side by side, using the same satelite, both clocks reading the same time. The Geek squad guys at Best Buy said it definately isnt the units themselfs its the new updates that are the problem. In that experiment the 765t had the 2009 update, and the 885t I had just updated hours before with the new 2010 update. But then again they were both wrong,so if you have an old unit that hasnt been updated i would say ONT UPDATE IT........its definately the update,i probally should'nt have said the unit itself is a piece of junk.

Software version affects how it routes. Some times they change how roads are classified, etc. I've run into that with my 660 using City nav 2008. I've had it route me off a highway through a neighborhood, then back to the highway. Switching to shorter distance gets around this, but then the rest of the route isn't worth it compared to the faster time version. This only happened on a specific stretch of roadway. This same error even occurred when routing in Mapsource with City Nav. When using older software, Metroguide, the routing sticks to the highway like it should when set to faster time. One thing to note, once you start driving if you take a better choice than what it suggests, the total mileage will change to reflect the change in route you made. The arrival time changes the whole time you're navigating as it adjusts based on your speeds over various classes of roadways. Welcome to the site, btw! Which Street Pilot did you use before? |

Someone sent me this on another GPS disscussion group,I thought it was interesting: One thing I always tell customer is that the mapping is all done by third parties, so when it comes to which GPS you should always know who does the mapping for that unit. Magellan and Garmin are both done by Navteq which TomTom is done by Tele Atlas. Tele Atlas is the superior mapping company not only do they do constant updates but the overall quality directions are just better. Its like Google Maps vs Map Quest. I never use Mapquest anymore. |

My Nuvi 660 with the 2009 City Nav update gives some wacked directions now and then. Really out of the way weird stuff. I'm tempted to roll it back to the 2008 version since it always picked decent routes. I've heard just as many complaints about TomTom routing as I have of Garmin routing so it may also be partially what the user is expecting. |

I dont know what to do,Garmin has passed me off to the mapping department. Now they want 4 examples of trips, addresses,Actual total mileage, vs. what the 885 said the mileage is.and if it doesent make sense they will pass it off to the engineering department. This particular trip i do is 133 miles, the 885 says its 128 miles,so i figured all they are going to do is go to Google Maps and punch in the two addresses and see what it says......so i went to Google Maps and did just that, and it said 128 miles, which is WRONG,ive done this trip 100 times,no recaculating, and its 133. What gets my ass is the Street Pilot got every trip right,EVERYTIME,and now ive upgraded to the 885t(600plus$$$$) and its WRONG EVERYTIME.Not a real big deal but for $600+++ I just want it to be RIGHT like the Street Pilot ALWAYS was.
