GPS Mount Guru

Having been in the portable navigation industry for the past 8 years, I've seen it grow from GPS software on Pocket PCs to the easy to use PNDs that we're all familiar with today.

Should you have any questions about what mount you can use with a particular device or vehicle application, please let me know.

While I may be slightly biased as I'm the VP of Marketing for Arkon Resources, Inc., the leading global supplier of car mounting solutions to the portable GPS industry (), I'll do my best to provide you with useful information that will help you make a sensible decision when mounting your GPS device in the car.

For those members of gpsdiscussion.com, I've set up a backend discount at our web site Arkon Resources, Inc. - The Mobile Mounting Specialists™ that you can use to save 5% on any of the ARKON mounting products.

Use coupon code "gpsdiscussion" for the 5% discount.

Hope to hear from you soon...

Regards,

Aaron Roth

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Greetings. Since you're the mount guru, can you call garmin and tell them to get their sh*t together!? The mount I had on my GPS V never stayed in place, but I thought the nuvi 200 mount would be better... It's NOT!
The other two mounts I've tried [jensen and NAVIGON] are rock stable. esp' the jensen one!!!

Welcome BTW!!

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Now you know why we (ARKON) offer premium consumer grade mounting solutions. For the Garmin Nuvi, we'll soon be offering a cup holder mount, lighter socket mount, and long windshield mount in addition to our popular Removable Air Vent Mount and Travelmount Mini Windshield Suction Pedestal. Hopefully, this will give you other options than the ones that always fall off.

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Aaron! Glad to have you here!

How about some mounts for Garmin's handheld line?

I have this dash mount for it for my 76CSx.

I don't use it all the time and don't want the disc it attaches to on the dash when not in use. If you had a cupholder mount that would work to hold the dash mount that would be perfect!

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Hi Andy,

Our specialty is really with the portable navigation units that are used in cars. We have a universal Side Grip cradle that's popular with mobile phone users that also works for some of the handheld Garmin Etrex devices.

Currently, ARKON offers upgrade mounting solutions for PNDs offered by:
Magellan
Tomtom
Gamin
Navigon
Lowrance
Asus
Nokia
HP
GlobalSat

Do you need a mount for your Nuvi?

Re: GPS Mount Guru

I don't need a mount for the Nuvi since the Garmin one is working fine. I may be able to use one of your universal cup holder mounts. If it had a flat surface instead of a side grip cradle on top I could stick the Garmin base to it and use the rest of the Garmin mount. Or I suppose I could modify one of the side gripe holders and leave just the flat surface. The side grip doesn't open wide enough for a 76CSx (2.75").

Edit. Actually I may be able to use one of your satellite radio cup holder mounts.

This one has a flat piece that would allow mounting of the Garmin base to it. I can't find it on your website though, at least not with the flat plate. I found SR033. Does that one include this base? I found the picture at Monkey Junkie.com (Google search got me there).

Second Edit: I skipped over the part on Arkon's site that in fact answered my questions. It comes with the flat plate that is designed to fit on the back on a sat radio, as pictured above.

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Hi ringowu1234,

I'm not familiar with the Asus P600. I know of an Eten P600 Smartphone that was introduced in February of this year.

As for Asus, they use our Dual T pattern on the Asus P535 and P527. I think they had an older model in 2002 that was called the P600. That one does not use our pattern.

If your device or cradle holding your device has our Dual T slot pattern built into it, then you can choose any of the pedestals from our Mounts for Magellan GPS page as they too use the same pattern.

Actually my mistake. The model is R600, not P600
And yes, after looking at the link, it does look like my holder- the dual T slots. Thanks.

The 5% discount is off of the retail price listed on the arkon.com website.

Re: GPS Mount Guru

I have a Garmin Nuvi 660 and the socket in the charging clip that the spherical mounts (e.g. dashboard mount) plug into is broken. Does anyone know what this is called or where I can get one?

Despite the screw in the back of the socket, it isn't totally easy to remove just the broken piece (even though it seems like it ought to be). Obviously I'd prefer to just replace that little broken dude if possible.

Thanks,
Matt

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Hi Matt,

I believe that Garmin refers to it as the "cradle". Unfortunately, I haven't seen anyone other than Garmin offering that accessory.

See https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1464#

As you may have seen from my intro when I joined this site, I work for Arkon Resources, Inc. (ARKON). We have a complete line of mounting products for the Garmin Nuvi. The newest being our Friction Dash Mount.

If you're interested in getting a high quality mount at a competitive price, then check our mounts for Garmin Nuvi at </title><html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <title>Garmin GPS Mount | Garmin Nuvi Car Holder | Garmin Nuvi Removable Air Vent Mount

Unfortunately, our mounts for Garmin don't come with that cradle that has teh power connector.

Good luck!

Aaron

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Any advice on best spot to locate an automotive GPS. The magellen i used for a year seemd to work best high on the windshield either near the rear view mirror or the A post. That location made the unit easily accessable and hidden from outside the car by the windhield tinted band at the top. If properly positioned the unit could be easiely hidden by the sun visor on the inside. It was also above my line of sight and easy to see the screen. I was always worried it might fall but it never did. Any thoughts welcomed.
Thanks

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Aaron,

Thanks very much for the reply. I already have a dash mount that seems to be working, it's just the cradle I need for now. But I'll keep Arkon in mind if I need accessories in the future.

Re: GPS Mount Guru

I have used Arkon in the past and haven't been impressed. The mounts look like they were made as cheaply as possible and are very bulky. I think you guys should come up with something sleeker, especially for us MN consumers that can't use windshield mounts. The vent clips are a joke and I'd rather use my cupholder to hold my beverages. There has to be a decent way to attach the Nuvi to the dash that will hold it securely and doesn't look tacky.

I am interested in what you mean by 'made as cheaply as possible and very bulky' , were you looking at the OE garmin stuff maybe?

Re: GPS Mount Guru

Max, did you see the link to the G3 that mjcorwin posted in another thread, did you?

That really is an unobtrusive mount compared to, say, a RAM mount. (I'm not familiar with ARKON).
