How can i add POI's such as best buy to my gps device?

my new laptop has a slot for sd cards, so i can definitely read my nextar gps' files and add some. i live in falls church virginia. Is it possible to add poi's and if so does anybody know where these files are? My gps has all poi's except for commercial stores. it has restaraunts, schools, gas stations, etc. but shopping wise it only has grocery stores. thanks.

i added poi's to my tomtom from the tomtom site...plugged it directly into the device from my computer (some gps units do not come with the cord u may have to buy one). check your nextar manual or go to the site directly is the best way.

Here is a good starting point for POIs and other stuff. You can spend some quality time at this site on many topics. Scroll down the list (alphabetical order) for POIs.

poifactory.com is another great place for anything and everything POI related. But, they concentrate on .csv and .gpx files. I.E. Mostly Garmin and Tom Tom. Not sure if those would work on a Nextar unit. Can you find out what format it uses and post it here? I'm interested to know.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to modify your POI files on your NexStar GPS unit, articfury. The company website doesn't have any links to software tools such as Garmin's POI Loader, so you'd have to find a 3rd party application that does it for you, or manually edit the POI listing yourself. Before making ANY changes to your GPS unit's files, I strongly urge you to make backup copies of the files in case anything goes wrong. Be sure to enable viewing of hidden and system files & folders, to make sure that you copy everything.

I Googled adding custom POI's to NexStar GPS, and the results were pretty disappointing. While there are plenty of people who ask how to do this, I didn't run across any "how to's" - so if you do figure it out, please post it here so that other NexStar users might benefit from your work.

That's one nice thing about Garmin. Custom POIs are just simple Excel files. I save them in the .csv (comma separated value) format. All you need is four columns. 1) longitude, 2) lattitude, 3) name of POI and 4) whatever description you want like address, phone number, etc. Still need some sort of POI loader program, though.
