Geocaching Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

Google Earth and Geocache Downloading

I just downloaded Google Earth. What an incredible program!

I've been trying to download geocache info from Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site and it says it can download .KML files to Google Earth, but I can't figure out how!

When I get to the download page there are different buttons to download in different formats (eg: .loc), but none for .kml.

Anyone done this yet?

Thanks

edit to add: Interesting, all I put in for the geocaching site was the URL, it automatically changed it to its "official" name. Smart.

Re: Google Earth and Geocache Downloading

It's good like that

But if you want to disable it, just click Go Advanced below the post and you'll be taken to another reply window (with your reply in it, if you've started typing already). Then if you uncheck the box, it won't do that.

Miscellaneous Options
Automatically retrieve titles from external links

Another option is type a set of words, anything really - then highlight them and click the button thats a globe icon with a chain link in front of it. Enter the url in the popup box and it will make those words a link.

As i have done here. <-- click the words.

Max,

Yeah, I'm used to the highlight text and press the globe-link button. That's how I did Google Earth above.

And I like how it did the lookup, I just wasn't expecting it.

They've reworked the site since I've last been on there. I see what you mean, I can't find any with kml files.

The only way around it I've found so far is to download the .loc file, which Garmin's Mapsource can open. Then hit "view in google earth" in Mapsource. That won't help you though if you don't already have Mapsource.
