| What new GPS Would you Buy?
Yesterday morning I had a problem with Matilda. (Miltida is my Garmin 760) She did not want to turn on. Finally did. That got me to thinking just what unit would I purchase if she did not come back to life. I want at minimum the functionality of the Garmin 760. I might like voice input. I would also like one that could tell what time zone it was operating in. That is one of my gripes with Mitalda. She stays on Central Time regardless of where I am. Obviously if she can tell where she is geographically she can also tell time zone. I woulf also like one that shows total road mileage when I look at the favorites list. Matilda only shows "as the crow flies" mileage. It would also be convenient to have one that I can turn off the voice prompt so that I do not have to continually hear "correcting" when I am doing something she does not like. What do you all think? PS It would also be nice if elevation was also one of the constantly displayed pieces of data. George |

All good ideas. Customizable display fields were "standard" before Garmin had an automobile line of GPS's. I picked up a Nuvi 660 when it released (for a hugely overpriced amount close to $1K). and it was a big disappointment. I had 3 hiking model Garmin's before and the things that were always standard on those were nowhere to be found on the 660. Garmin's website wasn't as good as it is now at showing all the features of each model device etc. I nearly returned it. Garmin has slowly added some of those lost features but for me a "perfect" GPS doesn't exist. The reason Matilda only shows as the crow flies distances to your favorites is that it would need to do a route calculation for each one in the background. These just don't have the processor to make that happen. Customizable display fields are standard on most of the hiking models. I don't think any of the automobile line have that. I don't know if the Zumo line has it either but it might. I always use my Nuvi's muted so not to hear "recalculating" every time I decide to do something other than the given route. That's really annoying! I haven't been to another timezone with any of my Nuvis but with my older 76S it would change the time no matter what timezone you were in, based on the data it was getting from the satellites. Guess that feature is gone in the Nuvis (?). My latest GPS purchase was a Nuvi 550. I wanted something waterproof for motorcycle use, full track logs, a touchscreen that was glove friendly, and most important, customizable routes. I drive and ride the back road twisties for fun and it's quite a challenge getting a modern GPS to guide you on those types of roads. |
