Cheap GPS Tracker for Motorcycle

Hey, I'm looking for a tracking device for my new to be Sportbike in case it gets stolen, which won't be 2 unlikely.

I've been reading all about GPSs for about a day now, but its a bit hard to figure it out with all the diff types and required presumed technical knowledge to find how I can do what i want.

Heres the deal, I'm looking seemingly for a Data Puller/Transponder with GPS that I can hide somewhere in the panels of my bike, which I can activate when I decide to, instead of having it track continuously thus sending a lot of data, and draining the batteries.Of course this means that I also want rechargeable lithium batteries that I can perhaps connect to the battery so I never have to worry about them.

The problem ive seen with all GPSs, is that they req. some kind of a subscription, or if its coupled with SMS/SIM cards you need to pay for that. I searched the forum and found a small post about non-SIM trackers which were well priced at $100, but are they really FREE? I want to be able to send info to my computer/phone since I have a 3g HTC HD2 touchscreen phone with built in GPSR. That way I can just track my bike thru Google Maps via my phone which has a data plan so I won't have to pay anything extra other than just the Tracking Device itself. Is this POSSIBLE? It needs to be small enough (palm of hand no bigger), and also strong enough to go through the metal roofs of vans where stolen bikes are most often transported. I'm looking for a battery life of at least a month, and then itl recharge from the bike so it wont be a burden for me since I plan to plant in somewhere hard to reach and find which will sit there for a long time and would be able to resist the weather since I ride everyday, rain or not.

Thanks.

Oh... welcome to the forum!
Thanks for the welcome and yes it is, its the HTC HD2 with GPRS and all the goodies like mobile internet. I checked out your link but that just seems to be an app for my phone. I want to place a device in my bike to stay at all times and track via my phone. I'm just not sure that i can have the sending device send data to my phone with its location without having to pay something for data transfer. Im looking for something that is free like if it sends through radio waves, but am open to other suggestions since if I only activate it when stolen I wont be paying anything of significance.

Not necessarily cheap, but check out LoJack for motorcycles:

Re: Cheap GPS Tracker for Motorcycle

They make LOJACK for motorcycles and that's a "turn key" system. And, it's a sportbike, not some precious work of art. It's easily replaceable. Have good insurance for theft.

Dang, DrData beat me to it!

Seriously, if your bike gets stolen, there's a great possibility it will be shredded for parts and/or heavily modded so it won't look anything like original. They will find ANY GPS type device on something as small as a motorcycle...and promptly destroy it.

You make an excellent point about stolen/stripped/get insurance!

No kidding. What's a decent, higher end Japanese "Big Four" (NOT Ducati, Aprillia, etc) sportbike cost these days? $12K or so...if that much? My Honda CBR600F4i kicked ASS and I bought it brand new for about $8k, but that was a few years ago.

If he can't afford to replace it... He can't afford it in the first place, especially if it's "primary transportation". Should have bought a decent lower end new car instead.
