| Walking/Hiking with handheld GPS
When you guys exercise or hike with a handheld, what do you do with it? Hold it in your hand? Beltloop? Backpack? Pocket? Kick it around? kidding.. |

When geocaching, it's in hand (the kids and I vie for who gets to hold it and call out instructions to the rest of us). When hiking, I attach my 76CSx to the top of one of the shoulder straps on my backpack or hydration pack. I wouldn't bother with leaving it on if I were to sling it on my belt or stuff it into a coat pocket or backpack - I imagine the readings would be too unreliable, due to the angle of the receiver and physical obstructions....

When I'm hiking or strolling, it's in a carrying case around my waist. When I backpack, it's either stashed away or hooked to one of the loops. In either case it's turned on so I can later save my tracks.

HumVee, the 76CSx gets the best reception when vertical. When hiking I keep mine in a case on my belt that carries it vertically.

For the shorter distances, under 800 feet, or so, I carry the Garmin 60's, or Magellan Meridian, verticle, above my head, so they don't lose the Sat lock. For wooded areas, trails, averaging points, etc, I use an adjustable pole,7-8 feet high, with the unit in a carrier at the top of the pole, or better yet, with the unit in the carrier about 6 feet off of the ground, and with an external antenna mounted on a ground plane, to get the best reception/performance available. I strap the pole to a tripod, when spending some time on a point A bit of overkill for the average user.
