Threaded GPS base?

HI all, new to the forums with a question.

I have hardwired my gps to my car and i also want to mount the gps on my dashboard (nuvi w255). I can't use the supplied adhesive mount due to my dash not having a single flat spot on it, and i want to screw the flat base in. I previously had a screw epoxied into the flat base and that worked good for about a month before the seal broke. so my question is does anybody sell a screw in or threaded rod style suction base? if not i will have to make myself one.

THanks

Hi PoBoy

What kind of car is it? You may be able to find a mount specific for your car, or at least a mount with a flat plate that you could adapt a mount to or use the adhesive disc on.

Here are a couple I've used in various cars.

Re: Threaded GPS base?

Thanks for the links but those are not really what i am looking for. They are too costly and don't let me place it in my desired position. Car is a '99 Grand Am. I am pretty set on a base that i can screw in where i need it. I would be surprised if nobody sells something like this.

Re: Threaded GPS base?

PoBoy, RAM is the OEM for all of Garmin's GPS mounts. If you're looking for solid, screw in mount systems - I don't think you can beat them. Some of the mount options can get expensive, but others are very reasonable. GPSCity is where I've gotten most of my mounts (the ones that didn't come included with my Garmin zūmo 660). There's a screw down plate mount kit for $25 that you might want to consider.

Re: Threaded GPS base?

I also want to clarify that by base i mean the flat part that the suction cup 'suctions' to. i want the gps to be easily removable without a big obvious ball mount. I guess any sort of flat base that screws into something would do, doesn't have to be gps specific.

Re: Threaded GPS base?

I'm having trouble picturing what you mean by "screw in or threaded rod style suction base." But if there was such a beast, you'd probably be able to find it on the GPSCity or RAM websites.

But I think that a variation on what you've already done would be cheap and easy to implement. You epoxied a screw head to the bottom side of the flat disc that the GPS mount suctions to, correct? But over time the bond failed and your GPS would fall off (along with the mounting disc).... I suggest that you drill a hole through the center of that disc, then thread a bolt with an O-ring through the hole - then on the backside slip a washer (optional) and a nut and tighten the assemply sufficiently enough to ensure an airtight seal? I suppose you could just slather epoxy over the bolt head to try to make it airtight, but I think the O-ring would be better. See my hacked together illustration for a visual.

You'd likely want to use a low-profile or flat head screw or bolt, and then slim washer and nut to minimize the thickness of the mod. You could get everything from Ace Hardware for probably about $2.

Re: Threaded GPS base?

I think that all he wants to do is have a flat plate screwed to the dash of his Pontiac. Then he can use his suction cup mount to fasten the GPS to that plate.

I would just go to your local machine shop and have then make a flat plate of the size you want and then screw that to your vehicle. Whatever you do it is going to leave holes in the dash that will be difficult to repair.
