Small gps to track animals

Hello everyone

I'm new to the site.

I just wanted to know if anyone knows about a cheap gps tag that you could place on a dog to track it's whereabouts in a 20km radius. This gps should function using cellphones preferably or computers.

thanks

Hi moloko. Anything using cell phones has to have a cell phone data plan... so you are talking 40 bucks a month. Hardly cheap.

GPS is normally to tell you where you are - that is, it is a passive receiver. Getting one to transmit even over short distances (as the Rino can do to compatible Rinos) is expensive.

I don't think you will find anything inexpensive for this application.

What size dog and what do you consider inexpensive? This is very common technology that is used by many businesses.

That link is quite informative, GeorgeC. Thanks. More options actually available than I realized. But none what I would call inexpensive.

I do not think it's neccesory, just track kids and the old.

Garmin already has something like this for specifically tracking dogs based on their highly popular 60C series GPS. A very quick and simple search yielded this:

Astro 220

Not going to get you 20 clicks of monitoring distance, though. Says up to 7 miles, but I'll bet that's a very generous estimate...

The Astro 220 with the DC-40 collar works great. You can see where your dog has been.

Re: Small gps to track animals

If you just want to track the direction try Johnson's Telemetry.

I use their receivers and tracking collars. The receiver mounted on the yagi antenna will give you a good direction to the dog. With a little experience you can also judge distance. Our lead dog carries the johnson collar AND the garmin DC-40 collar.
