What is the main activity you use your GPS for?

More so than my main hobby/lifestyle (motorsickles), I'd have to assume that folks here are from all walks of life and do all sorts of crazy things with a GPS by their side.

So now we have a new and slightly improved poll, which probably doesnt include everything but what the heck, thats what the thread is for anyway

When/where do you use your GPS the most?

I was going to say it was mainly for motorcycling, but I guess technically my main use is a Nuvi locating addresses for work. But the rest of the time it's a hiking model (76S/76CSx) used on my dirtbikes and streetbike.

I drive a truck for a living and while I know pretty much where all my stops are, I do use my GPS receiver for setting ETA's and for seeing where the heavy traffic is in the Chicago area. Once my unit learned my driving habits, I have found that the eta's are spot on.

I have a 205w with Navteq traffic.

I find on trips even if I know the route, it's nice to have the ETA. The traffic feature is always a plus!

I mainly use GPS for travel. You know, in a new place, it is better to have such a stuff to help you.

While more time is put on with the GPS in leisure travel in the vehicle, the boating use is probably more important.

I always have mine up and running with a destination routed. We get a LOT of road closures/detours around here, especially in the winter time. And, usually all you get is one detour sign off the current route. After that, you're on your own to figure out all these twisty little hilly/mountainous roads to get yourself back on track. With the Nuvi up and constantly recalculating, it's very helpful, especially at night. Plus, having the ETA, finding desired places along the way, how much distance left, etc...

Man, that sounds like fun. I couldn't imagine just being able to cruise around ANYWHERE and turn off of the road.

I like riding ATVs, and the only place we can do this is parts of southern WV.

"It is nice to have the ETA." I wish I could always remember to translate the ETA into the correct time zone.

That is one of my gripes with my NUVI. It does not give the time of arrival in the time of the location that is my end point. It always stays in Central Time where I start. Most of my trips are into Eastern time.

Leisure travel via automobile

Far from the most interesting option to pick, I use it the most for trips to away football ground. Locally I know my way around without it's aid on the whole.

I'm a car guy who's always driving, so I use my GPS devices for driving purposes. My TomTom gets me where I need to go, and my GuideDog gets me there safe and sound.

Pity you didn't include Search and Rescue as a category. Us SAR volunteers put a lot of faith in GPS to track searchers and area covered. As well as making sure the teams don't get too lost!

Doesn't seem to be a category for golf. I make my own golf maps and download them into my Garmin Etrex. Oh yeah, the Etrex also does navigation.

I have always been a map freak. I wanted a detailed map of all the small towns as we travel the back roads of America. I quickly learned about saving the tracks on my PC. Then with my camera clock synchronized with the GPS, I could geotag all my photos. Saving canoe & hiking tracks are good also.
Lately I have been using Google Maps to send pois directly to my Garmin 1490t. I don't have to write down the phone numbers or addresses any more.
