Kenwood dnx8120 map update

Hi,

I am thinking on getting a double din unit to my car, and I live in Dubai/UAE which makes the choice very difficult. All the units out there that have built in GPS's dont work in the Middle East.

There are solutions from Garmin that have the Middle East map, but these are external units which have to be hooked up to the Head Unit and then it works. Of course this doubles the cost.

The Kenwood 8120 is a Head Unit with a builtin Garmin GPS inside, but not sold in the Middle East. Since it has Garmin GPS inside, and there are other Garmin devices that work here, I was hoping I could upload an already developed Garmin map to the 8120.

Could someone give me any information if this is possible?

The Unit I would like to buy is Kenwood dnx8120

Kenwood - DNX8120

And this is the unit that works here in the Middle East as an addition to other Head Units*

Garmin KNA-G420AT

Kenwood - KNA-G420AT

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben. Welcome to the site!

I don't have any answer for you, but you might try calling Garmin and asking them. They are usually very helpful!

Re: Kenwood dnx8120 map update

Hi,

I think there is a reason why Garmin is not selling its products over here, so I am sure they wont give me any info.

I was more like thinking about getting the maps onto the 8120 somehow from another unit. I have had GPS devices, but they were always coming with a software that you could download and use with it. I dont know how these devices work, I never had a Garmin GPS before. What I had on Mobile phones, and laptops were always easy to modify.

I am thinking on getting the 8120 with US maps, and get here a local small Garmin navi which is relatively cheap, and use its maps on the 8120.

Any pointers are welcome,

Thanks

Ben

I don't think copying maps from one model to another will work. They map are usually locked to a specific serial number.

What Andy says.

With all Garmin units, you need an "unlock" code that is specific to that map and the unit it is installed in. No copying from one unit to another, or reusing the DVD.

Thanks guys.

How about getting not another unit and copying it from it, but rather a City Navigation NT CD / DVD? If I get it new, it allows me to install it on 2 devices, at least that is what I read.

These CDs are sold for the middle east, and I read on some FJ Cruiser forum, that if you buy a CD/DVD, you can run Mapsource or Mapupdate program and unlock the maps and upload it to an SD card. With the SD card you walk to your car, insert it, restart the unit, and it should have the additional maps. The only shortcoming is that you need the SD car inside all the time, if removed it will revert back to the old maps, in my case North America.

Can you guys back this info up?

Thanks

Ben

As far as I know, NT maps are limited to a single unlock code.

As long as it supports a single unlock, I am fine. If I buy the 8120 and a City Navigator NT CD/DVD, the only device I need unlocked will be the 8120.

What other maps can I look into getting? What is this NT map special for? I know there are ToPo maps, and City maps, but I dont know what NT stands for.

Thanks

Ben

Re: Kenwood dnx8120 map update

The NT refers to City Navigator North America NT. The NT version is compressed so you need a device that can use the compressed format. The mapdata itself is the same.

Thanks,

I assume the Kenwood dnx8120 would understand the NT format, right?

Best regards,

Ben
