Tired of Returning GPS Units - Need Advice!

Hi Folks,

I'm very glad to have discovered this forum and hope someone here can offer me some sorely needed advice...

I recently got rid of my beloved Garmin Quest after four years of constant use when it started to wear out. I naively assumed that any current model from a major manufacturer would have the same features that I had come to appreciate on the Quest. I've since purchased and returned two models from Magellan and one TomTom. Today, I got a Navigon 2100 Max and it will probably be going back tomorrow. I am, frankly, afraid of being banned from my local Costco and Best Buy.

I'm a huge data geek and actually used my old Quest for all kinds of things beyond basic navigation. Here are the features I liked most that I've not been able find elsewhere (in rough order of importance):
  • Software to design customized routes on my computer for download to the device (great for avoiding glitches in route calculation software when you know about a trip in advance)
  • Ability to view history of my travels on my computer, overlayed on a map, with time stamps and speed data (awesome for finding the best route for your commute!)
  • Customizable map displays (capability to determine what data elements are shown, etc)
  • Advanced trip computer functionality (avg speed, time stopped, time moving, moving avg, etc)
I just sort of took for granted that the newer, "more advanced" units would have all of this. I was, of course, wrong. I could go out and buy a refurbished Quest, but I'd really prefer a unit with a much newer chipset, faster processor, and larger screen. Note that I couldn't care less about an MP3 player, Bluetooth, or anything else that doesn't have to do with navigation.

Is there any unit out there provides a more-modern version of the features in the Garmin Quest?

Have no fear...you just described why my local Costco also wants to ban me. so far I have still found Garmin to be the best for the combination of what you describe, and since you don't mention touchscreen - I would almost suggest a Garmin 276c or 376c. These are not NEW or cutting edge units by any stretch..they are actually older than the Quest, and larger, but do have all the functions you're after.

There is the new Oregon and Nuvi 500 which are pretty smart looking, but not sure they will end up having all of the above.

If you do find one, let me know - because I've got a Zumo, 2720, and Legend HCx to accomplish all of the above
