Free NEMA server for windows

Hi,

I need a NMEA server for Windows. I have only seen them for Linux.

By NMEA server, I mean something that will transmit NMEA data over a network.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Free NEMA server for windows

So a serial data repeater? or something different?

It needs to get the NMEA info, and forward the complete, unmodified sentences over TCP/IP. GPSgate does it, but I am looking for something free.

Thanks,
Chris

Thats the joy of serial connectivity - it's smart, but dumb
On marine vessels I've heard of nmea devices going to a multiplexer and the mux feeding an RS-232 to tcp/ip converter and going out over a wireless (802.11a/b/g) network up to other devices.

I've also done this in the past when I worked on building automation systems. The downside is I cannot find the software I used to use at the moment, and it's name isn't ringing any bells.

however I did find this, and they offer a demo version...see if this will work for you:

RS232 to TCP/IP Converter Software TCP-Com, Serial to TCP/IP converter, Virtual Com Port, Serial to Ethernet, Ethernet Data, Comport Sharing, Serial Ethernet Converter, Ethernet Serial

The nice part about nmea sentences is since they appent to all serial standards, as long as you have the "com port" of the converter device setup appropriately, you should be all set.

The only issue you may encounter as I'm sure you're aware of is you're going to need to be able to pull it back down into something at the far end, so you'll need the same solution inverted running at the host side.

Did I already ask what you're trying to do?

I'm trying to send my GPS's NMEA sentences over to my NTP server, which will then parse then, gab the time, and use that time for when clients request the tiem from it...

Anyway, if you remember the name of the app, do tell!

Thanks,
Chris

Oh, so basically like a poor man's stratum clock?

seriously - give that above app a try (if you're prepared to build a parser for the packet level data). If you're looking for something to come in hot as ntp reference, well...that might be a little bit trickier

I will let you know if I recall it, but it was very similar in nature to what I mentioned above

Something like that, yeah.

However, you have given me some new search term s to try "RS232 - TCP/IP"...

Thanks,

Chris
