Looking for a hand-held marine GPS

I currently have a Garmin GPS III. Its base map includes island names, water depth and contours, shoals and all bouys for Lake George, Rehobeth Bay, Delaware River, and other lakes and inland waterways that I sail. The base map also includes towns and road maps, at a pretty detailed level.

I am considering upgrading to a low end, color hand-held GPS, whose base map also includes those items.

I already have a Tom Tom One 3rd ed. for the car, so all I really need is a hiking and boating GPS.

What can you suggest?

- David

to the site dddiam!

I have a 76CSx. It claims it can be used on water (depth, etc). I never have tried it though so I can't say how well it works. You might check out those on Garmin's site and look at their new Colorado models as well.

I would vote for the 76 series as well. I have friend that swears by his (and its not even as nice as the csx).

Thanks for the suggestion. The local West Marine has a 76Cx and a 76CSx on display, where I can take a look at the base map contents. ($100 off sale, also).

Thanks for the welcome, Andy.

I just noticed that the West Marine sale ended June 29.

But if you google "garmin 76cx", and then click the "Shopping" link near the top of the page, you will see a wide range of prices.

The best price for the 76cx is $195 from CompUPlus.com. ($170 if you pay via eBillMe using a bank account link).

There is a list of vendors' respective prices in the Google products catalog.

You can do a similar Google "Shopping" search for the 76CSx.

I am not sure what the differences are between the two models, other than that the CSx has a built-in electronic compass (the Cx only gives you a compass reading while you are moving, not while standing still). But I haven't played with either, so take that info with a grain of sea salt.

Re: Looking for a hand-held marine GPS

Make sure you check your sources on compuplus...I think they are one of the 'not so reputable' vendors out there IIRC.
