I want to set coordinate and go to it. Simple. What should I get?

These will be rural areas, property lines and abandoned oil wells I'm searching for. Would a Lowrance ifinder or some other small handheld gps work?
Or is there a specific type that I must get?
I'm new here with no gps experience but from what I've seen this seems to
be the place to find out what I need. Thanx to all, wally

Re: I want to set coordinate and go to it. Simple. What should I get?

Hey Wally,

There isn't really any specific unit that will do this, only some units that will not

I haven't much experience with the Lowrance units, I've only owned a couple of Garmin handhelds and they would all do what you need and then some.

You could probably get away with one of the lesser expensive Garmin Etrex or Magellan Triton units that can be found at your local WalMart. Our local one was remodeled and the sporting goods area now has about 10-15 handheld units that you can play with and see which one suits you best.

Will you be saving your destinations to a computer or are you looking for the ability to save a track and navigate it?

Also I am assuming you're looking to navigate 'as the crow flies' navigation? Not necessarily street or road routing, correct?

Regardless, most units today have the ability to handle some 'street' mapsets if that is the case...so I'll await your answers above.

Oh also, how much are you looking to spend?

Re: I want to set coordinate and go to it. Simple. What should I get?

Hi Max,
I figure once I get to the location I will remember how to return. And yes,
"as the crow flies" is what I figure to use. However, some mapping capability would be fine. Do most gps units tell you what direction your objective is from your location and how far ( by degrees I suppose) it is to it?
As far as cost goes, I don't need new or top of the line but I do need it functional and understandable.
Also, thanks for responding so quickly to my query.
