Using background maps

Ok so I may sound like a rookie here, but that is because I am trained in two different technolgies, so bear with me. I have a garmin 12 that I need to upgrade badly. At work I use a Trimble GEOXT (sub meter) unit. On that trimble unit I often import background files (maps/aerials/vectors) mostly in drg, sid, formats. I am looking for a handheld that I can do the samething with...Our state has a great gis warehouse available to the public, and as I use these maps in my mapping program (ARCgis 9.2) I would like to use them in my handheld as well. ARe there programs to convert them? Are there units out there that will take these files directly? I am having trouble wading through all the info. Thanks.

Re: Using background maps

Welcome to the site Ike

I am not too familiar with the GIS side of things, but is something like the below close to what you're trying to do?

DNR Garmin Application: Minnesota DNR

edit: It seems to have more options for going 'backwards' from what you're looking for...but I thought some of the features might at least give some some functionality on the Garmin unit.

Re: Using background maps

This seems more PC oriented, but also discusses uploading to handhelds?

Re: Using background maps

Ok two more, if your state's info is encoded similar to how the USGS does it...this should work for you:

Apparently this is an entire subculture I never picked up on, lots of folks out there seem to have their own 'diy' mapmaking websites, like this guy:
