Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

The Garmin 350 Nuvi comes with a "built-in" lithium-ion battery. It cannot be replaced by the user. Garmin's web site inidcates that the charge is $225 for any repair to a Nuvi 350 which presumably includes replacing the battery. Lithium-ion batteries seem to last at most a few years. This adds a considerable expense and inconvenience to owning the product. I am looking to buy on refurb tomtom one XL
Refurbished Gadgets Store
Does anyone have any problem with tom one xl?

That's one of the reasons I like some of the hiking models which use AA or AAA size batteries. Leave that lithium in extreme temps too long and it's toast. I would consider inside the windshield on a hot day a fairly extreme temperature.

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

I own a GPSMAP 276c for Off Roading competitions that we have here in Venezuela such as Fun Race 4x4, also I have a 60CSX which I love cause the accuracy and speed of adcquisition of satelites, and last but not least a Colorado 400t which I havent use a lot... just go it out of the box and for what I can see so far it is not much better than the 60CSX, I find it hard to manipulate whith that wheel.. I have to get use to it.

Hello, GeorgeC. There are at least a few boaters floating around here (sorry for the pun)! I've been involved with a number of threads where marine model GPS units were brought up.... Glad to have you join the forum. Your experience with marine GPS will be a help to others!

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

savepurs, were your last two posts meant to be haiku? If so, I don't think you have the rules right...it's 3 lines (you got that right):
5 syllables on the first line
7 syllables on the second line
5 syllables on the third line
A poor example would be:
My Zumo, so nice
I want to play with it, soon
Lost, needs GPS?

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

You can't make the generalization that all Garmin products are better than all other makers products (for one thing, it isn't true). Specific models may be "best of class" - at least until somebody comes out with something better. It's kind of like the whole Canon vs Nikon thing in the digital camera market - competition is good for us! The other thing that make Garmin a good option is their overall support, their continual map updates and firmware updates, etc. If you go with a small or "no name" brand GPS, you may find it nearly impossible to update down the road....

Is there a particular type of GPS unit or a particular application you're looking for a GPS unit for? What are your criteria?

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

Since I've already voted, I can't nudge the current 69.77% for Garmin closer to 70% - but I'm now the happy owner of a zumo 660 as well as a GPSMAP 76CSx!

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

I'm not familiar with NDrive products, but from the website they appear to be nice products. Do you know who NDrive works with to get their maps? For instance, many GPS makers (like Garmin) use NAVTEQ....

Marekk,

I use an NDrive. It is possible I think, though I haven´t looked into it myself yet. You could probably find more details on their website.

Would be interested to know what you find.

5 dimensions maps? My GPS maps are also from Navteq. I can not imagine. Could you show me a picture? I am really interested. By the way, My GPS maps are also from Navteq.

I'm sure 5 dimensions is an exageration - though I'd love to see a screenshot if one is available!

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

Ok. Maybe a little exageration but I don't know how to name it In my opinion it's another layer which is above the normal map. So: normal Tele Atlas map + special layer of photos. I think that they are made from helicopter or plane because You can really take one of few cameras. I've found video on YouTube. It's not really fresh (I have newer V9 version of software) but You can find out how it works:

YouTube - NDrive - Computer graphics

Sorry, but I don't know if embedding works on this forum. If You need I can later try to make a film with newer software (if I learn how to do it)

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

Thanks for the information Marekk. In the future Please just make one post with everything.

I didn´t know they had such wide coverage. Its a relief. The maps are nice. They have a lot available. I guess I won´t need to look for another GPS for when I move.

But I would still like to learn more about how well other systems work though. TomTom seems to be really popular. Maybe their models have more features? Has anyone tried both NDrive and TomTom?

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

I'd also suggest that you start your own thread, rather than tack on to an unrelated one. General GPS Discussion is a fine subforum for you to create your posts - but you don't need to put them into a long running post like "What brand(s) of GPS do you own?"....

Here is a press release from Ndrive. Hope it provides some infomation.
“NDrive faces a tremendous challenge in three (3) completely different dimensions. One: To move from a company focused on being a Hardware / Software vendor to a company 100% focused in Software Development. Two: To globalize and consolidate its business and operations worldwide. Three: To become a reference in multiplatform navigation software (iPhone, Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile), while keeping the focus on innovation and differentiation”, says Mr. Luis Baptista-Coelho, according to whom: “Innovation has been part of the company’s DNA from day one and it’s a team sport. In NDrive we have among the best brains in the industry today. We need a collective effort in order to make sure that our technology reaches the market with impact, visibility and value to our customers and partners"

Heh! So they are making a big shift to be software supplier. That's not bad! I saw also in iTunes their new application for Iphones - full navi with maps of Portugal. Maybe in the near future they will start with all Europe

Re: What brand(s) of GPS do you own?

The best thing is to keep it powered off, and disassemble it as much as possible. Unplug the battery lead from the circuit board if at all possible, pat dry the components and interior of the case...and cross your fingers that you haven't already shorted out any components. Let it dry in a warm room with low humidity for a day or two and then reassemble everything and see if it works!
