How to record gps data on video

Hi.

I fly the weekends on my ultralight plane taking videos of my routes, now i want to record the gps information (lat-long. elevation and speed) at the same time in the video recorder.

I dont want to edit or synchronize the video later with the gps on a pc, i want to do it directly do you know how? i will need a laptop on board to do the job?

This is a sample of what i need.

Any Help will be apreciated.

Thanks

Re: How to record gps data on video

Welcome to the site Angel, it's a request I haven't come across before and a need I haven't personally had so I am looking around to see what might fit the bill for you.

My first question is, what are you currently using for getting a GPS fix? are you planning on using this device, or do you want a seperate external device?

Re: How to record gps data on video

I did find this:

KIWI-OSD Home Page

But it's not exactly what you have above...and not sure how much decoding you want to do. I'll keep digging.

Re: How to record gps data on video

Looks like the image you have above was captured using one of the devices similar to the below:

Intuitive Circuits, LLC. - GPS Wireless Text Inserter, GPS Overlay, GPS Encoders

edit: The one above is insanely expensive...something like this would probably fit the bill:

Intuitive Circuits, LLC. - Text Inserter and GPS Text Inserter

I am assuming you already have the GPS portion of things? You just need to get it on the screen? If this is the case you'll need to make sure your GPS has a NMEA output that can tie into the video multiplexer/osd unit.

Thanks Max, i´m using a Garming GPSMAP-196 on my ultralight plane and a Panasonic HDC-sd5 high definition video camera on board to take the videos, the funy thing will be mix it the imagen and the gps information.

I found this page for that pourpouse and looks very easy to do it, but i really do not now if it is waht i want, no pics or demos, and my english is only 80% i will like to see some samples of this.

New Generation Video

Please take a look on the above link and tellme your opinion.

Thanks

Re: How to record gps data on video

Hmm, yeah the lack of demos and pictures is a little rough for me too

I am not sure about either of the above places - it looks like the New Generation folks are encoding the data and you have to use another program to un-encode it later on screen (which I think would be a pain).

The Red Hen stuff looks like they are trying to sell complete packages only, not really interconnect equipment like you are after.

But, thanks for answering the questions - now that I know I will dig around a little more as soon as I get some free moments

Thanks Angel!

Re: How to record gps data on video

Here's a video on the hardware setup - it all custom built
YouTube - GPS Data Logger

Here's another video from another custom built data logger from a sportsbike
YouTube - Sportbike Northshore Cruise Data Logger

Basically, you've got to know how to design printed circuit boards, solder stuff, be able to program microcontrollers (C & assember), know a little about video and some GPS data format. It helps to have too much time on your hands, too!

Here's video from 1st prototype of this GPS data logger

Oh, well, if that's all. That's easy! Except I, uh... I don't have too much time on my hands. Yeah, that's it.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!
