Ok so, i plug in my GPS today to do some, assumed, much needed updating. I have yet to get the 2010 or 2011 maps, whichever is out, i only have the 2009 maps from when i bought it, regardless, i plug in my Nuvi and get to the update section. Now, i havent updated this sucker in a GOOD 8-9 months, possibly more, and i come to find out there is no software update available beyond the Ver 4.90 i have installed on it currently. Ive had this version for probably somewhere around a year. Why is there no further software updates?

Do i need to purchase and install the new 2010 or 2011 maps for the GPS to be able to run a new software update or has garmin just thrown us 760 (7 series in general?) users to the side since they have new products out?

I'm certainly not going to buy a new GPS every 2 years just so i can get updated software when my current GPS is running as well as it ran the day i opened the box.

One other question i have, which may or may not be useful, but theres a GPS Chipset, Type M that showed up for updates today in my list of available updates, however the description showed no change to anything, unless its something new that's possibly a pre-req for a new software update? Not sure on my part, however, if someone could please enlighten me on these stated issues as to whats going on and what it all means, this would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Firstly, make sure you have downloaded and installed the CommunicatorPlugin_292.exe file or latest version from the Garmin website.

Then when you go into myGarmin, either Garmin will tell you there is an update to your firmware or you can so search for it yourself under software.

Similarly, you can search for the latest version of mapsource CN NA and download it yourself.

is that the same thing as webupdater? i just downloaded that this morning.

Actually, I forgot to mention webupdater. So go ahead and use it. But if you are still suspicious that there hasn't been any updates, you can look at the Garmin site for all the updates and their release dates just to be sure.

In the screen where you download webupdater, Garmin gives a link to all their updates called "All Updates & Downloads".

Not sure I follow the original question: is the issue about getting map updates or getting software updates.

Generally, software updates are used to fix defects, bugs, problems... So it is possible that there are no further updates. That happens with GPS devices.

Map updates are treated differently, they are a source of revenue, after the initially free update to get you up to date at the time of purchase.

Both software and map updates depend on updater software to check for versions, ownership, unlock keys, etc.

I don't follow, which one of these is the issue here?


This would be correct, there is no need to buy a new GPS every 2 years just to get updated software. Keep the one you have until it dies. Check from time to time for free software updates, in case they are needed. Unless you are expecting some feature that's not present on your device there is no issue.
