Hi All...

Just got myself a 60CSx with 1GB microSD card. Loaded new 2011 City Navigator North America NT with it's product key, etc, ect...onto Mapsource. All's well. Then selected States on Mapsource to be send to the GPS...after a while of downloading/transferring maps to the GPS...GPS says. "can't unlock maps"...and stops. I have just the basemap now and want the full NT map. NT(1.73gb) maps go to the SD card ? and the SD card is 1 GB..could that be a problem...don't wanna sound stupid but doesn't excess go to the internal memory?

What gives??

If the size of the maps is 1.73gb and you only have a 1gb card of course it won't fit. Did you register your 60csx unit with garmin.

Yes, register both your 60CSX and your map to the myGarmin site. Then wait 24hrs. Download the cable communication software (or whatever it's called).

If the automatic web unlock doesn't work, write directly to Garmin for the unlock code.

Here's the scoop with Garmin after having resolved the issue via letting them enter my PC and do the configuration themselves while I watch their cursor browse to and forth. Very cool and interesting.

This is what they found. I had on Mapsource: 2010NT(NUvi); a spring purchase of (60CSx)plus (2011.1) NT DVD. Then in August another 60CSx and a new NT DVD(2011.1). These two were conflicting due to two different serial and unit numbers. So they had to give me a new unlock code and update(2011.2) for the new GPS to accept the maps.

They said since I already had a 2011.1(old CSx) I wouldn't need another NT DVD, just use the current one as I am entitled to a free update for the new 60CSx.

Since Mapsource is now on your PC; I was also told that it is not necessary to buy a new NT DVD everytime you purchase a new GPS as long as it is still the same calendar year!

This is interesting. Aside from the "old days" when an update cost $150 and you got two unlock codes with it, I have NEVER seen a single instance where Garmin allowed City Navigator to be used on more than one unit at the same time without having to buy another unlock code. The "same calendar year" thing sounds kind of wishy washy, too...

So on Mapsource you had unlock codes for 1 nuvi map, and 2 60CSx devices/maps. And Mapsource was able to deal with a nuvi and a 60CSx coexisting, but Mapsource got confused by the addition of the 3rd device because that being another 60CSx caused a conflict/confusion. So then for my understanding, the rule is the Garmin Mapsource can support a stable of devices but not two of a kind?

Correct....it seems so. Aaggrrggg. Even the GPS vendor was told by Garmin that he has to sell a new North America NT for every device....not so; tells me the Garmin Tech if it's in the same calendar year. Wonder whether all Tech will agree or.....?

Thank you for sharing your experience and what you learnt. Seems to me that both are right in their own way.

For Garmin to do business they need to sell a map with each device. Otherwise with just 1 unlock key say for the latest map update someone could be doing a side business of transferring map updates to other devices belonging to the family and friends. (Perhaps there is such a loophole, perhaps unintended?)

On the other hand, for someone who genuinely has 2 devices, the Mapsource software does not handle the confusion/conflict well, so the Garmin Tech had to tinker with it to make it work with just one unlock code.
