Please help a Newbie Select His First GPS!

Hello all,

I hope this is allowed (I'm sorry if it is not). I was hoping experienced people like yourselves will chime in with experiences and knowledge. I am moving to San Antonio for school later this month. Since I do not know the city at all, I figured a GPS was a good idea. I have heard Garmin's are the way to go. Today, I bought a nuvi 1300T with lifetime map updates and lifetime traffic for, what seemed to me, a decent price from Best Buy. I came home wanting to research my buy and found that people have had trouble with this model shutting down randomly and never coming back on. Is this a bad model? Is there a better one? Any and all input will be appreciated. Thank you!

I am assuming that you want a GPS for your travels by vehicle.

I imagine that you are going to get about as many model suggestions as there will be responders. There are a myriad of potential units that would work well for you. There is probably no one best unit for you.

Several months ago I purchased a Garmin 255W for my daughter. That seems to do the vehicle travel job very well without a lot of bells and whistles. You cannot speak to it in voice and have it respond, which keeps the price down. My older model Garmin 760t also does not have voice command and I am perfectly satisfied with it.

You can now find the 255w for around $100.

I cannot speak to potential problems in the model you purchased.

Well, if anything, you'll definitely get more traffic over there than here...
