Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

I have a nuvi 765T and and 255T. Both units direct me to routes on business roads and avoid highways. Driving a V8 on highway with constant speed does save gas instead of traffic lighted roads. I have played with all options possible but no use.
has anyone encountered this problem or just my luck?

Re: Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

peptomedia, make certain you don't have Avoidances enabled that might impact the GPS unit's selection of route. Go to: Main Menu > Tools > Settings > Navigation > Avoidances and make sure that Highways and Carpool Lanes aren't selected (the latter is optional). If you're using MapSource to plot your way, then make sure that your MapSource Preferences are set correctly. The latter scenario isn't likely, since the 255T isn't Route capable, but I wanted to cover the bases, in case anyone else searches the forum on this problem.

Re: Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

Thank you humvee,
I have done all your suggestions but no luck. I have a 765t and a 265t; Both devices behave the same way. It is a bit frustrating to go through business roads with a V6 Jeep.
On line note: mapquest also plots same as GPS but Google-map give the highway for the same directions, interesting!

Re: Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

I would report the error to NAVTEQ. It won't do you any good right away, but will help with future map updates of the area. There must be something wrong with how NAVTEQ has the road coded, that makes the GPS units (& MapQuest) route the way they do on that section of highway. I thought that this issue was all highways are being avoided...is the behavior consistent with all highways, or just the one you happen to use the most?

Re: Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

It actually avoids highways if there are business roads available. In Maryland going from east coast to Baltimore directed me to route 2 (business road) instead of I97 with 65 mph limit. It took me about one hour extra to get to my destination.
In Florida, Ft Lauderdale, from the airport to hotel, about 3 exits from beltway, nuvi 765t took me in a side road safari!
Meanwhile, the iphone using google map was directing me to the beltway.
In DC, Georgetown, Nuvi 765T was directing me to obvious visible stand still traffic while the fm transmitter attached; meanwhile iphone gave direction around the traffic.
I think it is way for garmin to make money by direction me to crowded areas so I may receive a coupon hoping they can collect royalties!

Re: Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

It seems doubtful that Garmin would try to play such tricks - they'd be found out pretty quickly, and would get a lot of bad press. Have you contacted them about your navigation issues? If anyone has a solution, it would be them.

Re: Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

Yes. I contacted the support and sent them the actual route selection and maps. It seemed that they were some what confused about this issue and recommended that their map producer to be contacted. Since my device is new, I am trying different routes to see if the problem persists before contacting the mappers.
Garmin in general has been very good in customer service.

Re: Garmin Nuvi avoids direct highway directions

I would contact NAVTEQ (Garmin's map provider for road maps, post #4 above) each time you find an error on the map or with routing (or POI's). Road map databases are immensely complex, and it takes all of us users reporting descrepancies to help improve them.
