| 60CSx - Calibrating the Altimeter
When I did this for the first time, I selected NO for the elevation, and NO for the pressure. I did not have either. What is the best way to calibrate it? I am ever sure of the exact elevation. I mean, I could go with what is on the topo map. Is that what most people do? I went to the beach a month ago, and I was standing in the parking lot next to the hotel. (right next to the actual sand/beach) I checked the elevation, and it was -15. Now, I know sea-level is sea-level, and I was not below it. hahaha I am just wondering what the best method is to set this. I hate that it floats so much, and wish it was more accurate. If I enter the elevation manually, will it be more accurate? Thanks, Adrian |

It's bad enough that I am slow and have to "hunt and peck", but last night while trying to reply, the keyboard locked up. Lets see how much I can do on part 1. The only way to get the GPS elevation on a CSx, is on the Sat page, menu, bottom choice. This is only a "snapshot" of the present moment. I sometimes hit quit and enter several times over several seconds, to get a fair idea of the elevation, under ideal conditions. Then enter this into the known elevation. More later. |

Yes, elevation from any good source, Topo, sign, GPS, etc. When I set the Barometer reading from the TV, radio, or meter in my house, it changes the elevation reading. The Altimeter elevation is suppose to adjust to the GPS elevation, after x number of minutes. I don't use this much, as I usually am using a 60Cx, which lacks the Altimeter and Compass. I agree that is is too bouncy, even under steady conditions, like when connected to my external on the roof. ( High desert, no trees, out in the open, ideal setup ) The SiRF chip is bouncy enough, then add on an Altimeter that is sensitive and bouncy = fun trying to get a steady elevation. Need to play with it! Hope that somebody who uses this feature more than I do, will add something.

I think that Altimeter readings are always erratic, because the analog sensor is strongly effected by temperature (which changes air density) and none of the devices I've ever used have been super good at compensating for temperature.

Follow up, with the 60CSx connected to the external antenna on the roof. Menu> to the Altimeter page. Set the Auto Calibration to On, and the Barometer Mode to Fixed Elevation. Then calibrated the Altimeter to match the house Barometer setting. This changed the elevation about 200 feet lower than where it should be. When I checked it about a half hour later, the Altimeter reading had self corrected to match the GPS elevation. I left the unit on overnight, and the next morning the Barometer matched the house Barometer. In the field, the Variable Elevation is suppose to work for those conditions. |
