| Ordered 1490T, Online Manual lacking details
I recently ordered the Garmin 1490T. I currently own a Garmin 2610 and if it weren't due to the fact I can no longer get map updates I might not be looking for a replacement. I downloaded the Manual for the 1490T from the Garmin Support Site. I am very disappointed with the lack of information in this manual. Is there a 3rd party written manual or guide that does the 1490T justice? The manual gives no indication that there is a more detailed GPS satellite screen accessed by pressing the GPS icon for 5 to 10 seconds. Also I believe the 1490T has the ability do display additional user selectable information boxes on the map screen. Again this is totally absent from the downloaded manual. Where can I find a manual that might describe everything the 1490T can do? The Garmin manual doesn't cut the mustard. Tnx, J |

| Re: Ordered 1490T, Online Manual lacking details schmidtj, the deplorable lack of information in modern GPS manuals (all brands I've seen, not just Garmin) is a well known fact. I have been unable to find a 3rd party in-depth manual/guide by specific brand & model, like the Haynes manuals you find for automobile maintenance. I think it's a ripe market that can be tapped, and I've thought about going in to business myself - but between my current job and raising 5 kids...I won't have time to write until I'm retired! Do you mind waiting 20 years? We wish that Garmin would publish more in-depth manuals. It's understood that Garmin doesn't want to overwhelm the many new GPS users who are buying their first GPS unit, but it would be nice to have an advanced manual available for download. In the mean time, we make do by posting specific questions on forums such as this one, and Googling for answers on all of the forums out there.... |
