MapSource problem in system-recovered desktop

Hey, this is my first thread as I had been lerking for a while.

Recently I had problems with my desktop computer and had to do a system recovery. Unfortunately, I had checked my harddrive for documents to save, but there wasn't any.

So I had to re-install all of my programs and settings as if I had just purchased the computer.

All of my my mapsource maps and my GPSMap 76CSx are registered with Garmin. In MyGarmin, my maps are listed with product code and unlock code - even the free "garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_20" they gave away last October is listed.

The problem is the 2010 map won't load and states that "there are no previous versions installed". The only map I am able to install and unlock is the 2008 version. The 2009 upgrade won't install either.

Does any body have any suggestions?

tostig, when you say you haven't been able to uninstall the 2009 & 2010 maps - where you able to download them...or do you mean that the 2008 map was the only one that had a link for downloading, and the others just state "No update available"? It may be that you gave up a little too soon. To re-download the newer maps, do the following:
  • Log back in to myGarmin
  • Go to the myMaps tab
  • Find the latest version of the map you have listed
  • Click on the Details link. This takes you to a page where you can redownload that update that is locked to your device.
If you've done all that, but still are having problems getting them to load onto your device - it may be because you must first start with the base map before you can apply the updates. Meaning go ahead and build the 2008 version map for your 76CSx, and once it's done, try applying the 2010 or 2009 updates to it.

My problem is reloading my maps into my desktop computer. I have the original CDs for the CN NA NT 2008 and the 2009 update and the free installation for the 2010.20 from Garmin.

I have to re-upload all my software back to my computer due to a system recovery.

The 2008 map is the only one I was successful in uploading. The 2009 update proceeded and then just stopped. The 2010.20 won't complete the installation. When I check the "Utilities>Manage Map Products>" Map Product Information only lists the 2008 map. The other tab "Unlock Regions" lists the 2009 and 2010 but not installed (or something like that as I am not at my home desktop right now.)

(My GPSMAP 76CSx unit currently has the 2010 mapsource in it.)

Re: MapSource problem in system-recovered desktop

And you get no error messages? I recently tried to update from CN North America NT 2010.30 to 2010.40 and got an error message that I didn't have enough room on my hard drive for the unpacking process. I've since gotten a larger hard drive, but haven't had the time to install it. You also might check to see if your antivirus program is intercepting and quarantining critical files during the instal. Sophas AV is famous for being hyper-sensitive to threats and quarantining everything. If you suspect your antivirus solution, turn it off for the duration of the install. Also, don't be shy about sending Garmin Support an e-mail, or giving them a call (if you have the patience to wait on hold).

Re: MapSource problem in system-recovered desktop

Problem has been solved. I telephoned Garmin and connected to Software support. Let them take control of my computer and they re-uploaded a specific file (CNNANT2010Update_ENU) instead of the entire "garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_20".

Then they uninstalled all the previous versions of Mapsource CN NA NT.

So you're back in business. Good news. I'm glad you had a positive customer support experience...so often, we only hear about customer support problems!

You have to have a lot of patience with Garmin and their unlock codes. They do try to help out no matter how long it might take.

That's true. And unlike a great deal of companies, they don't check first to see if your product is still under warranty, or make you pay for the support call with a credit card....
