Map loading problem

Hi this is my first time here and hope someone can help me .I recently purchased a map update from Garmin it is the 2010 Europe city version . I downloaded the file to my PC without too much trouble but I am unable to transfer the new map data to my garmin nuvi 610T . I just keep getting a message that the map file is too big for my unit. I have been in touch with Garmin support several times without solving the problem. I have tried inserting a 2 gb data card in the machine but still no luck. Any ideas please.

Re: Map loading problem

Dave, I think this is simply a case of not enough storage. I think my City Navigator North America NT map takes up more than 2 GB - and I'm sure the city and road density of Europe is significantly higher (leading to larger file sizes). Your Garmin nüvi 610 uses SD memory cards (not micoSD). A 4 GB card isn't terribly expensive (5 - 7 pounds, be sure that it states "SDHC" or else you'll have problems with some devices).

I don't know if it will be a problem with your map build once you get the larger capacity card - but you may not be able to build a map set larger than 2 GB if you do it by having the memory card in your GPS unit, and having the unit plugged into your computer. It was a problem building my map set for my Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx. The answer is that can use Garmin's software to build a map set up to 4 GB in size if the flash memory card is plugged directly into your computer (not using the GPS unit). Most laptops have a built in SD card reader. If you're using a desktop PC or an older laptop, you can purchase an SD card reader (or Multimedia Card reader that can handle different kinds of cards).

Once you have your SD card plugged in to the reader, and the reader plugged into the computer, launch your MapInstall or MapSource software. Use the Map Select tool to select your entire map region (zoom out if you need to, in order to see the entire map). When you initiate the map build, select the SD card from the drop down selection...then be prepared to wait for hours and hours for the build to take place - but it will be all worth it when you slip your card into your n610T and get your new map!

Re: Map loading problem

I have finally got the mapsource program to work at the 3rd attempt of downloadinding it from Garmin . I am as I type this loading some map files for the regions of mainland Europe I intend to tour in the next few weeks. My only worry is will it work when I get over the English channel? Is there anyway I test weather the maps are functioning ok without actually being there ? I have included the UK on the updates so that should help.
Regards and thanks for your advice
Dave.
PS Today Garmin have offered to sort out my problems for free If I return the unit to them ,but as I leave in just over a weeks time I am worried I will not get the unit back before my departure date.

Re: Map loading problem

Well, it sounds like you're up and running now. Yes, you can test to see if the road map is working for you. Just select a destination for one of those locations you plan to tour next week, and select "Go!" You should see your n610 calculate & build a route. You should then be able to tap on the navigation screen to bring up a 2D map showing your entire route, from start to finish. You can zoom in and drag around to see more details. That is, if your n610 is anything like my z660....
