Displaying Upload Tracks as Trip Lines?

NUVI 750

Hi there, I use trip lines for snowmobiling. Well, I loaned the GPS to a friend who erased the trip log. Don't you hate then non-techie friends randomly push options in your menu? Why delete ANYTHING on something you do not own?

I figured I would go into Mapsource, restore a gpx by uploading the tracks back to the GPS and be on my way. I hook up the GPS. Open the file with the dates of the trip logs I want and Upload Tracks to GPS. Disconnect, fire it up, and expect to see nice cyan lines.

NO GO!!! I can see my trip logs in the TEMP.GPX, but I can not get them to show on the GPS again, and they are not showing in the Current.GPX.

What gives and how do I get my tip logs back on the GPS and visible without running a few hundred miles of snowmobile trails over again? PLEASE HELP!!

Hm, make your "friend" ride them for you?

I think (not sure and device not here for testing) that it is a simple matter of renaming the .GPX file on the nüvi. It only looks at one.

While it is USB connected as a mass storage device, try renaming the TEMP to CURRENT (back up the current one first onto your PC) and see if that helps.

I hope it does, 'cause I don't have anything else to offer as ideas...

No kidding. I should.

The Nuvi reads the temp.gpx, but only for everything BUT the tracks. Even though you can push the tracks up into the temp.gpx

The current.gpx is an output file from Nuvi internal memory to allow you to d/l the nuvi memory into Mapsource. Editing current.gpx on the nuvi does nothing.

Um, maybe he was trying to delete his trip data/info and yours got torched along with it? Did you tell him NOT to mess with anything specific?

Anyway, don't rename the .gpx file to current. "current.gpx" is your favorites file on a Nuvi, so you don't want to overwrite it. You can open it as an Excel file and see for yourself.

You should also, if you haven't already, keep a backup of your entire Nuvi on your computer. You need Mapsource. You can copy the temp.gpx file to your desktop and import it into Mapsource. Then you can send it back to your Nuvi and all will be restored. I just went through this same thing with a "lost" track with a different Garmin unit. Pull the file off the GPS, load it into Mapsource and send it back to the GPS. Worked perfectly.

Must not have been a NUVI. Nuvi does NOT allow uploaded tracks (to nuvi) to display by turning on trip log visible. You can upload them to the Nuvi, but they don't do jack but sit there.

Re: Displaying Upload Tracks as Trip Lines?

bhshaman, I know that it's drudge work, but you could view your Tracks in MapSource and use the Route Tool to trace them. Then send the Routes down to your Garmin nüvi 750. It can only store 10 routes in internal memory - but you can store an indefinite amount of them in MapSource and download just the ones needed for the current trip. Remember that after you download Routes to your device, you must Import Route From File (as mentioned on page 28 of your Owner's Manual). If you need a primer on how to use the Route Tool in MapSource, I wrote one and it's posted here.

It is not drudgery when you use WinGDB3, it does it for you.
Will convert a track to a route no problem.

But, I think the Topo map I put on the Nuvi is taking up too much space.
My rather large route (from tracks) will not import. Get a memory issue.

The thing is that Mapsource does not want to easily merge tracks. So, if you take 4 or 5 runs to make a whole trail map, it is NOT easy to get them all linked and turned into one route.

Trip Log Visible lets you just run over anywhere you have been before. A very easy way to be off road and never lose your way and not have to keep stopping to swap between routes.
