Re: does anybody have golf maps for Garmin 255W?

there are other gps units that you can buy golf course maps to load on them. Just trying to get Garmin aware that many golfers have a gps that would like to be enhanced with golf maps. Why should we have to buy another gps when lots of money could be made with a $20 sd card.

The reason that you have to purchase a golf specific GPS is that they are much more expensive than a basic GPS.

Re: does anybody have golf maps for Garmin 255W?

The Garmin 255 can be used as a golf GPS if it has the "off-road" selection for navigation. Another limitation is the distance displays in feet/miles or meters. Meters to yards conversion can be done in your head by adding 10%: 160 meters= 160 + 16 = 176 yards. I've used a Nuvi 205 for golf, but it is awkward. If you want details on how to do it and see a screen shot of the display, check out:
wideopenwest.com/~don_barger/nuvi-software.html

There is also a link to download golf maps for Garmin there. If the course isn't listed, you can create one with the online tool. Its free and no signup needed.

The best handheld GPS for golf are the hiking units like the Garmin HcX. They can be setup to display in yards and have a phenominal battery life.

That looks like a Golf Course POI product. I didn't see where it says it actually has the course themselves mapped out but maybe I read the description and missed that. The dedicated Golf GPS has the actual course in the map data and tells you how far you are from the pin, etc.

Re: does anybody have golf maps for Garmin 255W?

For a golfer just having a map of the course is not sufficient. Whatever GPS unit you are using must be able to give accurate yardage from any point on the map to either the center of the green or better yet to that days setting of the pin. Of course this changes at least 18 times during a round of golf.
