Newbie with a few ?'s

Okay first off I am new to the hole GPS thing. I have been thinking about if for some time and finally bought a GPSMAP 60csx. I am sure it is way more then I will ever need but the price was right. I got it for the use on my road bike, four wheeler, snowmobile, and hunting. With the GPS I also got the 2010 North American City SD card and a RAM mount for the bike and one for the wheeler.

Okay so my questions are:

1: Can it show me the temp?
2: I put in two waypoints and have it calculate a route. After it has calculated a route I do not want to fallow the route it has I want to take some differant roads. How can I edit the route? Do have to just put in more waypoints?
3: Can I create a route on my PC using Google, Mapquest, or another program?
4: If I can which one?

Thanks, Chris

Re: Newbie with a few ?'s

1. No, that temperature reading is for an NMEA sender used to give temperature of the water. The 60CSx HAS got a temperature sensor but it is used to compensate the barometer against temperature changes and not for in-hand readings.
2. Route calculation on this unit is from where you are to a specified point.
3/4. Not tried because I use DVD versions of maps and use RoadTrip (Mac)

and btw ^^

Re: Newbie with a few ?'s

Thanks for the imput.

Bummer on the temp. I seen it would do water. What is up with that? Why water temp but not air temp?

So a route may not be the best term to use.

So say I am at point A and want to get to point B. I put point B in as a waypoint. My gps will says to take the freeway cause it is the fastest. It calculates the it will take you 2 hrs to get to point B.

Now say you have 4 hrs before you want to be at point B. So you want to take some side roads and see the area. Cause you have not been there before.

How do you change the way the GPS is tring to send you?

Thanks, Chris

Re: Newbie with a few ?'s

It will only display a reading for temperature from an external input that sends the temperature reading via NMEA to the unit. This is useful for fishermen who may well have a sonar that can send depth information and temperature to the GPS.

Re: Newbie with a few ?'s

First off I am no expert so bear with me on my discription.

Okay this is what I have found on how to create and modify a unique route.

To create the route:
Main Menu / Routes / New / "Name" / Map (bottom right)
Place pointer over intersections you want to go to to form your route
Press "Enter" at each point.
When you are finished press Quit

If you want to change the route:
Main Menu / Routes / Select the route / Map / Place pointer on line between the points you placed in the area you want to reroute / Enter / Move pointer (the line will break and fallow the pointer) / Place pointer on new location / Enter

If you place the pointer over any of the points press Enter you now have options.

Hope this helps.

Yes. I don't have time to write it all out again, but if you search the site you'll see that this has been discussed a number of times. You need the Garmin Communicator Plugin. MapQuest allows you to create routes and send to your Garmin. Google Maps is far easier to use & manipulate, but only sends Waypoints (not connected together to form a Route). There is a third party solution that lets you use Google Maps to make a route - it works but is a little 'kludgy.' If you search and still can't find the info, let me know and I'll give you the hyperlinks.
